Quest items disappear when abandoning quests

I noticed this last night when I was clearing out one of my quest logs-- 1.12.1 added "functionality" that destroyed your quest items when abandoning the related quest.Which is great when it works the way its meant to-- I'm always annoyed when I find a "Scrap of Paper" taking up a slot in my bags at 55 from a quest I'd abandoned twenty levels ago. But according to what players are saying, the destruction is a little on the greedy side-- it'll even destroy items you've picked up for the quest, i.e. if you've looted Arugal's head and then abandon the quest, bye bye to your head. And I haven't yet heard what might happen on normally non-quest items-- if you have 6 stacks of runecloth in your inventory and a quest requires 3 pieces, will you lose everything when you abandon it?
It doesn't help, then, that this is mentioned in association with "curbing experience hoarding." A lot of players have already put quite a bit of work into saving up turn-ins and otherwise to quicken the route to 61, simply because they weren't told before this that it wouldn't be allowed. And especially if this "functionality" causes people to lose things they don't deserve to lose (or just plain want to keep), the fact that Blizzard did it (in only part, admittedly) to slow down player progression might be pouring salt in the wound (did they even put an "item destruction imminent" warning in the abandon confirm?). At any rate, be careful with your quest items when abandoning. Anyone tried trading them to a friend and back while you press "Abandon"?

trading them to a friend? umm... how many quest items aren't soulbound?

Not sure I see a problem with destroying things labeled quest items. Why keep the items if you aren't going to do the quest? The only quest I can think of that has an item players might want to keep is that one quest where you get an item to transform you into a furbolg. Other than that...if I abandon some Troll STV quest, feel free to destroy my bone necklaces, tusks, etc for me. Saves me a few clicks.
I CAN see where destroying non-unique quest items might be a danger, but surely if that's happening, Blizzard would patch it.

Well, I can see a few instances where it might be a problem. I know I've encountered a full quest log and then abandoned a 'collect 15 of xxxx' quest to go do a quick escort quest, slay some guy, or whatever the case may be, go get the quest again, and pick up where I left off. I understand that that is extenuating circumstances, but it's still a little aggravating.

i abandon a quest yesterday and its items didn't disapear

Thanks for pointing this out since I was wondering when they implemented this. I got a quest from a tavern in the Mage District of SW to get a chilled basilisk part from STV. There is a 30 minute timer but in the past, if you didn't get back in time, you just abandoned the quest, picked it back up, and then turned in the quest. However, it destroyed my basilisk meat so I couldn't use this method. It took me two times before I realized what happened. The first time, I just assumed that I'd accidentally destroyed the quest item. Oh well, I guess I'll never finish it since I'm thankfully done with STV with my mage alt.

im sure ive banked quest items before (not having much room in bags) and when abandoned the quests the items did stay in bank. so that would solve the problem of not having to send to friend then abandon and get him to send you it back.
