WoW Moviewatch: Behold, the power of a GM
Digg is linking to this blog post (who knows how long it will last) about "the Top 10 WoW Exploits of All Time." Like most Digg stuff, it's a few things you've probably seen before, compiled and hyped up to be much cooler than it is. But of the exploits-- Old Ironforge, falling under Stormwind, the airport, and the top of Ogrimmar-- the last one is the most interesting (and not really an exploit). It's video of someone setting up a private server and showing off just how much control a GM has over the game.
The comments in Digg point out that these "commands" are probably not what the actual Blizzard GMs use to control the game-- they're placeholder commands created by whoever hacked the server code. And while all of this stuff is pretty cool, we're guessing that if you're actually a GM, the chance to use it is rare-- usually you're fixing tickets, not spawning legendary weapons or Rag in the middle of Stormwind. Still, it's a fun little watch.

I think this stuff is aculty what GM's can do, but who knows? I have played around a little with private server just for fun, but setting it op to "be like" blizzard server cant really be done becaus a lot of stuff doesent work, but its still fun to play around with a couple of hours..

To have your own private server I've heard that you gotta Hack Blizzard's coding or something like that.

Just download the private server software. Then change the realmlist file in the WoW folder to "localhost" then create an account with the server softawre and run the game.

Where do you get the private server software? Also, is this activity considered illegal to Blizzard? As in, will it get you banned?

I'm not going to tell you where to get the software, as it is a kind of grey area legally. You probably wouldnt get banned for using it.....but i'm not sure.

You can run WoW world program on one computer? I kinda thought you would need some sort of cluster or many servers...and with database servers etc.

All it requires is a server emulator (hint - google it) for world of warcraft. You wont use your regular account when you do this...you make a new one like jaz said...also your NOT logging into the blizzard realms, you are logging into your own realm hosted on your local network...which means you can play offline or LAN. It would be very hard for blizz to catch you for it unless you told them you've been doing it :p However I am unclear wether setting up private servers is againt the TOS.

Watching this makes me wonder whatever happened with Fanatik's new Exploration movie. Wasn't that supposed to be out by now?

Okay, seeing as the most common WoW emulator is not illegal, as it's, infact, just an MMO Placeholder system. It's called MANGOS. Go google it. Now, the illegal thing is the database involved. Find that youself. And, yes, dabbling in server emulation can get you banned, but, how should they prove it?
Also, these commands do exist, but the common GM cannot use them. Only the highest level GMs can use all of those commands, such as spawns/items. (Thus, if the instance server crashes after a boss kill, but before a boss loot, you need to get a "specialist" to replace it for you.)

I've set up one myself once after seeing this video. It was pretty neat... For about an hour.
I spawned Ragnaros in IF, soloed Onyxia and pulled all the NPC's in Org to kill them in the end with a simple command.
That was about it, it got boring after that.

i have a private server little lonely out there :P but i dont know how to make myself a gm i did some searching on google but there is not 1 desant tutorial about it :S
