More info on the Patch 2.3 PvP trinkets

None other than Lead Designer Jeff Kaplan answered multiple questions concerning the new PvP trinkets announced for Patch 2.3. Here's a summary of his comments:

All versions of the trinket have a click effect to gain 1750 max health (kind of like the old lifegiving gem effect), along with a passive effect (your choice of 47 spell damage, 40 spell crit rating, 80 attack power, 40 melee crit rating, or 88 healing). (source)
They cost badges of justice, which will also be available off Kara and Zul Aman bosses. (source)
They're open to all classes. The click effects share a cooldown though, so you won't be able to stack that effect. (source)

One player was very unhappy that he would be forced to PvE just so he can got back to PvP'ing. Kaplan responded that experiencing different parts of the game isn't such a bad thing and stood his ground on that decision. I wonder if he'd feel the same if he forced PvE players into PvP for better gear.

these trinkets are a bit hybridized, really (and i don't mean hybrid as in 'zomg druid/pally/shaman' but as in good for pve and pvp.)

a clicky-heal might be worthwhile to some for pve, so i can kinda see why they went with the badges (which should be pretty common to get after 2.3) rather than arena points or honor.

oh, and as for forcing pve'ers into pvp'ing for better gear...you mean, they don't already? almost all the raiding rogues i see are using the S2 pvp offhand, my solo-pve set is basically nothing but the S2 +dmg plate set -- chances are a good many of the serious pve'ers are at least casually pvp'ing in BGs and arenas just to help optimize their gear.

Seeing all the gimps with an arena rating of 1000 or those who runs around in AV on an average day I'm quite sure that enough PvE players have been "forced" into PvP by now. Maybe lured by easy-epics is a better description. With S1 for honor points it'll get even worse.
To be honest I would say that a "skilled" (well equipped) PvP player should have little trouble barging into a heroic instance and obtaining a bunch of badges. Pushing one faction past revered shouldn't be a too daunting task either.

Comment 2 has it right - raiding guilds already expect anyone who applies to have the best gear possible, and the Arena weapons are the best non-raid gear out there by a longshot. One of the top raiding guilds on my server actually takes PVP-only applicants to fill out their honor/arena farming groups, with the understanding that they'll get to sub into farm mode content once stuff is in danger of being sharded.

@2 Indeed, I'm playing a destruction warlock as a raider and do arena's for the imba dagger with 225 spelldamage. Also did some BG's for the bracers with spellcrit. But I prefer PvE. In fact I hate pvp but do it only for the better gear.

@2 It's much easier to casually do 10 arena matches waiting for your guild to form up for Kara, or to run AV a few times on Saturday morning, than to raid. Any level 70 can sign up for a 2v2 team with a single friend, or hop into any BG all by his or her lonesome, but to run Kara you need to have run a bare minimum of 7 other instances (Sethek Halls, COT:Durnhold, Mechanar, Botanica, Arcatraz, Shadow Labyrynth, Steamvault) as well as do at least one other group quest, plus other easier aspects of the keying process. That's just to get access to Kara, and for many 'casual' or even 'dedicated' players that's difficult to complete in and of itself. On smaller servers, and RP servers many players need to run those as PUGS where it can take days to just get a group together at this point.

Then you have to have 9 other people who want to hit Kara with you, and at least on my server nobody is PUG'ing Kara yet outside guilds.

So a hardcore PVE player has zero barricades to experiencing every single aspect of PVP play, while a PVP player has numerous ones preventing him from accessing the other content.

I can just imagine the bitching that would go on if there was an amazingly great PVE trinket that you could only buy with 100 Eye of the Storm badges, but you couldn't even enter the Eye of the Storm BG until you got Exalted in WSG, and completed a couple of side quests solo, then Ran some in game quests in Arathi Basin, only to then have to get exalted with frostwolf in AV, and have an arena team with a minimum of a 1800 rating in order to even ENTER the Eye of the Storm BG...Oh and then have a lead developer who is known for his preference for PVP content over PVE content make some lame comment about wanting the PVE players to experience more of the game, and it really isn't too much of an imposition.

dumb question here.

when they say "season 1 for honor points" are they referring to regular honor points from BG's? Or are they still refering to Arena Honor Points?

probably a dumb question but I just have a tough time wrapping my head around being able to use BG honor to buy Arena armor.

well, you probably will need the flight point. a true hardship, that.

not to mention -- if your a serious hardcore/whatever pvp'er -- wouldn't you be revered with at least one or two factions just to get the head enchants? seems a bit crazy not to be.

if kara is somehow beyond ones reach, do heroics (it's faster badge generation than kara, anyway.) you can get 3 badges from mech every day with laughably little effort.

Seriously? Did you just say that? How are PvPers FORCED to get that trinket? No more than PvEers who get the epic bracers, boots and belt from BGs. Or raiders who have S2 set pieces and weapons.

I agree it's not much of a big deal when you can do a couple heroics over the course of a week and have the badges necessary for the trinket.

At least I'll finally be able to say I've BEEN to those instances!!

He does. Seriously, gearing up an offspec (and apparently all shamans are some sort offpsec) without PvP and Arena is insanely painful.

PvP is by far the easiest route to loot unless you are a "cardinal" and spoon-fed spec. The fact that most of it is better than everything but the very end PvE gear doesn't help.

Totally agree. As a Ret Pally, arena gear is my only viable option for gearing up. Kara literally has no DPS plate except one pair of boots off of Nightbane.

Ret Pally plate? Oh please. Not a chance.

I hate PVPing, but I feel that I have no choice if I want to be a raiding Ret Pally.

He already force people to pvp to get pve loot. The best dps staff in game (including BT/MH) for feral druids is the S2 mace. I am a strict pve:er that is "forced" to run boring arena games just so I can get a decent upgrade to my old karazhan staff.

They already force players into PvP for better gear for raiding anyway, as anyone who read up on the 97.7 dps weapon debacle knows. Many of the Season 2 weapons cannot be topped pre-Black Temple, especially for melee classes.

It's nice to see PvPers getting the same treatment. I have no problem with people choosing a different playstyle, but this faux outcry is coming from the same people that were telling the PvE's 'it's fine, l2p' regarding the Season 2 weapons.

Personally I dislike mixing PvE and PvP, they're two different games. PvP was tacked on just before release and needs a lot of work to become a properly fleshed out playstyle like PvE is. I think this is a step in the wrong direction.

However the alternative view also has some credibility. By mixing this gear up (just as they have done with arena rewards already), they allow those who wish to experience a different playstyle, a bit of a leg up. For instance, right now, I can't do arenas for crap because my gear is PvE gear. With this trinket, I'll be able to perform a little better.

Take your pick, but I doubt anyone's going to change Jeff's mind on the subject.
