Ashbringer Wednesday

If you love comic books, play World of Warcraft, and are interested in the lore of the Ashbringer -- all of which I actually apply to myself -- then you might want to set aside $3.99 and check out DC Comics' limited series about the legendary sword coming out this Wednesday, September 10. The first issue of a four-part limited series, the comic deals with the story of Alexandros Mograine, the Ashbringer himself.

Produced by Wildstorm Studios, the guys behind the World of Warcraft comic featuring the badass Varian Wrynn, the comic will be written by Blizzard Creative Director Micky Neilson and drawn by original WoW comic artist Ludo Lullabi with help from Tony Washington. The covers will be drawn by Blizzard Art Director Chris Robinson (not to be confused with the singer of The Black Crowes...), with variant covers from Lullabi and Washington.

I haven't been able to find the comics in my part of town, but judging by that sample art ...

... since when was Mograine a dwarf?

What, in the picture above? Those proportions are human enough. Just because somebody has a thick beard and broad shoulders doesn't mean they have to be a dwarf. That's the strong Nordice influence that affects WoW in many visual patterns showing through.

No, I'm not talking about his beard. I'm talking about the freakishly bulbous nose, low forehead, and too-wide mouth.

It doesn't matter that The Ashbringer is all shiny and the armor is properly shaded and rendered if the underlying drawing is weak.

That image is plain old bad art.

You made a mistake in your article. Lullabi can't draw, so he can't be the artist. How can someone who can't draw be the artist?

I was hoping Lullabi and his close-ups of freakish blob-people were done with. I'm letting my subscription expire. I'm not paying for half a book worth of panels that make no sense without copius exposition. (Yeah, half a book. Maybe artists need to be paid by the panel, then we can stop with this 4 panels per page bullshit.)
