Tips for taking down Coren Direbrew

Update: Some people are saying you don't need the starter quests, which is probably true -- there's a quest NPC inside the instance, so probably all you need to do is talk to him. But it is important to not have done the quest already that day -- pickup groups won't take you if you've already summoned him that day, as that means they get one less chance at the loot.
To start the quest, then, you just head into Blackrock Depths, and Blizzard has given us a nice mole machine shortcut just to the right of the entrance (I hear you have to kill some Dwarves there, but every time I've gone in, other party members have already cleared them out).
Etherjammer sent us some good tips he wrote up for the fight itself -- it's a pretty standard tank and spank, but there are lots of adds and other chaos to deal with, so it seems a lot more complicated than it is. EJ says you're supposed to clear out the Guzzler, but I didn't have to -- even with the occasional fear, we were able to keep Direbrew and his cronies in the room without grabbing more adds. There are three nonelites that come with him, and they pop up during the fight out of mole machines, tagging a group member for a few hundred damage each time. Direbrew also summons two Elite maidens -- one throws a beer at you that you have to drink to avoid a stun, and the other does an aggro wipe that's a little worse, but she drops fast if you focus on her. Both groups I've been in with just ignored both of the elites, but our healers were particularly well-geared so we didn't have any problems.
In general, drop the adds as best you can -- if you're fast enough on DPS and healing, you can let them build up a bit before clearing them out and then returning to the boss. And as EJ says, once you get Direbrew to 5%, you might as well pop trinkets and drop him, as everything despawns when he dies (the fight is generally long enough that you can hit trinkets at the start and hit them again right near the end). I was too chicken to try an all-out assault on him while ignoring the adds, but as a Hunter, I really only worried about them when they started hitting the healer, at which point I brought them down myself.
Here's one final tip, too: if you can, try to go every day with the same people -- almost all the stuff he drops is unique, so even if you lose a roll one day, if you take the same person the next day, the item is yours for sure. In two runs I haven't seen a mount yet, and the drop rate is supposedly pretty low, so if that's all you're farming for, good luck. But the other epic items seem just about Karazhan-level or above, so if you're in that early endgame zone that so many players (including myself) seem to be in, odds are you'll find something good that drops in there.

No offense to the Warriors/Druids out there but a well geared Paladin tank makes this fight a breeze. I've managed to 4-man it several times with a Paladin tank.

I agree, it really is easiest with a paladin tank.
And for healing really any healing class can do it no bother.

Druid tank, druid healer, hunter + 64 shadow priest, no problem to do. Only died when shadow priest decided to go healing :)

This is a perfect example of the disparity between warrior tanks and paladin tanks that Blizzard refuses to fix: AOE tanking. With WOTLK, Blizz gives tankadins the ability to manage single target tanking as effectively as warrior tanks. However, for AOE tanking, warriors still are not on par with takadins. Shockwave is nice, but is no where as simple, or effective, as consecrate. Blizz did increase the damage/threat from Thunderclap in beta, which was a dream come true, but that was quickly nerfed. As a warrior tank, I dread running PuG heroics because the rest of the group are unwilling, or unknowledgable about the special requirements of warrior tanking.

Actually I did this with a warrior tank, and he held all 6 mobs on him throughout the fight fine, thank you very much.
Warriors have an easier time at single target tanking (I'm not talking about threat generation but the mitigation factor), while pallies are ahead in AOE tanking, that's how the niche thing goes.

Wow, seriously, just single point Coren and ignore the adds entirely.
They despawn when he dies.
We have 3 and 4 manned him in this way.
And my shaman and a pally tank two manned him.
Really, Honestly, Kill Coren and ignore the adds.
Geamo Sep 22nd 2008 2:41PM
Managed to down him every day so far with my summons-pally tanks shine here due to thier ease-of picking up AoE threat.
As a hunter it was a straightforward fight, just feigning every time threat was wiped.
The most difficult(and longest) bit of this whole thing is reaching there, and the lengthy corpserun.

You do know that when you walk into the instance, on the right are a handfull of 70 Dark Iron non-elite dwarves guarding a Mole Machine that will take you right to the bar, right?
Geamo Sep 22nd 2008 3:38PM
Yes, I know the drill machine bit. Just getting people from Shattrath to there takes longer then you imagine (due to no summons).
Also, the corpserun is LONG. Top of Searing Gorge, all the way down to the mountain, then finding your way back to the instance.

Joe I guess you are on a PvE realm then. You wouldn't understand.

I'm still confused by the need for a corpse run. Getting there from shat is a pain unless you get the remote drop and can port your group from anywhere (I have one!!!). But once you're in there, just kill him 5 times, get your loot and head home until tomorrow.
Also, I've only ever focused on Coren. Never bothered killing the adds. This worked with a warrior tank, though the paly tank was a lot easier. Actually, with the paly tank I usually run with, it's better to not kill adds because she wasn't taking enough damage to heal otherwise.

I had to practically strip off all of my gear to tank him. The guy CRUSHES me for 600. He has a lot of health, but assuming you are all in at least Kara-ish gear then it's absurdely easy.

The mount seems to be a not-so-rare drop. First Brewfest day and I've seen at least 10 people with a kodo. Some with a ram, but who cares about them?
Counter-hint: unless you're a holy pally, don't try to duo it with a prot pally.
As a resto druid, me and a prot pally buddy were duo'ing it. Adds under control, he was good on mana, went well til 30%-ish. Then one of the adds barrel'd him and everyone came for me. A holy pally could had bubbled. Other classes... Well, I died in a second.

Although you could be mistaken there. For the low, low price of two tokens (as Horde, don't know about Alliance) you can buy Hops at the Brewfest vendor. The hops act the same as Preserved Holly in the Winter Veil event in that it will turn your mount into a Brewfest kodo. Spend 3 (or 4...?) tokens to mount on your ram.
Still don't know of anyone with an actual mount.
Jamison Sep 22nd 2008 2:50PM
The reason you're seeing Kodo mounts so much is that you can spend a couple tokens and get a hop from the vendor that turns your mount into a kodo for a period of time. The mount itself isn't dropping that frequently.
Hokuto Sep 22nd 2008 3:04PM
Well, I checked the mount tooltip on every case (I'm addicted to inspecting, heh). Unless the hop changes it as well, they were legit mounts.
Two friends got the kodo yesterday, some other got the ram (boo hoo), and I got 6 tanking trinkets in a row (I'm dead serious). At the very least, as Blizzard stated, the drop is WAY better than a sinister squashling's.
Manatank Sep 22nd 2008 3:24PM
It isn't very rare. I know several people who already have the kodo and several who have the ram.
MissMutilate Sep 22nd 2008 3:44PM
Perhaps it was a matter of circumstance, but the resto druid I ran with survived our paladin tank being barreled. I believe she used barkskin and then healed herself through it. If anything, switching into a few pieces of PvP gear or any other stamina heavy pieces would give you more of a fighting chance.
You might not have a free get out of jail card when it comes to picking up things that want to kill you as a druid, but you certainly do have a few options.
Nathan Sep 22nd 2008 4:22PM
We got the kodo and the ram yesterday in our first attempts. I was lucky enough to win the kodo. The kodo mount really is the best of the two by far and is a pretty fun mount. The ram...eh...

Killed him well over 50 times on Sunday and only saw the mount once... Anecdotally, from what I've heard I'd say the mount is a 1/100 chance.
I think the remote is cooler. Unfortunately I lost the roll on both the mount and the remote.
