Breakfast Topic: Power-leveling Inscription

When the realms come back up this afternoon, patch 3.0.2 will bring with it new talents, new skills, and a whole new profession: Inscription. This is one major Wrath feature we'll be getting early. The new profession will allow players to augment their spells with glyphs, which are ultimately made from herbs. The herb markets on some realms have already surged from people stocking up to power-level Inscription. I'll probably take advantage of the high prices to make a few gold, myself, and become a scribe later when it's cheaper.
But if you are interested in becoming one of the first scribes on your server (which could be quite lucrative), you may want to look at this power-leveling guide over at WoW Economist. It details exactly what you'll need to rush from 1 to 350, and what you can make to do it. In total, it looks like it should take about 72 stacks of assorted herbs, so I hope you're stocked up.

I was originally intending to take up inscription, but in all honesty I'm not at all sure it will have any significant money making potential. Most of the glyphs seem to be readily available at trainers meaning that everybody and their wife will have them, and whilst their will be a large initial demand I think this will rapidly tail off, especially as the upcoming dual spec system will be linked to glyphs.

I don't see it as a moneymaking thing. But rather on an alt, something I can do for my other characters (glyphs etc)

Allright, I can start farming ahead of time, just have to see which alt will be getting this new profession, it'll depend on which class profits the most from adding another Glyph
Won't be much farming since i had a bank-character specifically for herbs since before I powerleveled Alchemy

IMHO it will be better to farm herbs for those who want to powerlevel inscription.

Exactly how I handled it. Once the servers come up I'm throwing stacks and stacks of overpriced crap on the AH so that I can price gouge the people who think this profession will be lucrative. With 35% of the responders saying that they'll be powerleveling, that's a lot of undercutting that's gonna be going on in the AH just to sell off the stuff they level on.

Me too. Not because I'm planning on leveling Inscription, but because I've got three guild bank tabs dedicated to herbs I've been saving for months.
20 Stack of Peacebloom starting at 10G per stack as of last night. Prices go up from there.
Oh, it will be way more expensive.... for a few weeks at least.

Ya I have 7 guild tabs full(2 alli side and 5 horde side) and about 4 toons full with a ton in the mail. So looking at about 1200-1400 stacks of herbs :)
Anyway my question is do I just try to sell the herbs or should I level a toon up enough to sell the pigments or inks?

I'm gonna level it, but not powerlevel it - just recently started a new character who shall have inscription as his profession.

I've got 2 guild bank slots full of all kind of herbs.
So far, I don't see the point having it for something else than a caster or a reroll parked in a capital.
This is maybe the first profession making me feel "bleh" about; anyway a friend of mine will be leveling it tomorrow.
Maybe if I'm bored I'll grind my way to the 375 with my warlock.

Dart, you have about enough to powerlevel 2 scribes, you'll make a nice profit of vendoring what's left, that's for sure :-)

I leveled up herbalism the other day to 375 in less than a day. Kept all the mats i gathered just for inscription. was really easy and i think i have enough to get quite far in it.
Its nice to have something which can sort of go with enchanting (emphasis on 'sort of') because getting a secondary profession to compliment enchanting is a right shitter.

If you're a clothie then tailoring goes well with Enchanting. You don't need a gathering profession and you can DE stuff you make. I'm still curious how much the scrolls will cost that we need to sell our enchants though. I'm sure I'll be sending a steady supply of mats to the guild scribes though so it's not too big of a deal.

The scrolls for enchanting shouldn't really cost very much as the materials are pretty insignificant. The only issue is I'm not sure what the eventual restriction will be - on the PTR the maximum level of enchant that could be contained on a scroll was lvl 35 and below. I'm hoping that 375+ inscription will allow the production of scrolls to hold higher level enchants otherwise it will be pretty useless.

I think you misunderstand the nature of the Velium.
The "level 35" Velium effectively functions as a level 35 item. It can accept enchants which require an item of at least level 35, which includes such enchants as Mongoose or Major Spellpower.
