Many servers not yet up after all
The previous post about the servers coming back online seems to have been slightly premature. Many, if not most servers are still offline, and the current target for bringing them back is 6 PM PST/9 PM EST. Be aware that this target has been pushed back three times since being originally set for 2 PM PST/5 PM EST today, so I wouldn't count on being able to play any time tonight necessarily. And when the realms do come up, I wouldn't expect them to be super-stable; the few realms that are up right now are having all manner of crashes and other difficulties.
That said, I'm can't really be mad at Blizzard for any of this. This is possibly the largest patch in MMO history, as one astute commenter pointed out; it would have been extremely optimistic to expect it to go off without a hitch. We'll be back sooner or later (unless they decide to just leave the servers off until Wrath hits), and we'll have plenty of new toys to play with. In the mean time, why not check out our voluminous coverage of the patch, or our handy all-in-one FAQ?

You've seen plenty of patches before. You've heard stories of downtimes from big BC content. It never once occurred to you that there could be errors?
Being able to use past experiences to predict possible outcomes is part of being an adult.
Handling let-downs with some amount of dignity intact, is part of being mature.

Okay, 5 hrs after the time we were initially told, I would have expected a Blizzard employee to at least have posted an apology and assure us that they are working on it, instead all we get is a message saying they should be up by 2 hrs ago.

I've officially decided that I am not going to play on release day of WotLK. If this is the best Blizzard can do in releasing major content then I'm going to avoid WoW on Nov. 13 like the plague.
I can't wait to explore everything, but it will just have to wait till Friday at the earliest.

Did anyone seriously think this would not happen?
People have abandoned the game for the last few weeks because of Wrath. Now, everyone that hasn't been playing decides to try to DL the patch and login to the game servers. That would be about 10 million people trying to access the same content at the same time. HELLO!! That may cause some issues.
Patches as large as this and launches as large as Wrath is going to be never go smoothly. Expect the same for the Wrath release.
If you want to avoid getting all nerdraged up, then avoid WOW for a few days after these huge patches and expansion launches.
Srsly....go do something else...no need to have a freakin aneurysm over it.
Go watch some porn or something.

OK people.. there is no reason for a 12hour down time on ALL the server.. do them one at a time. if you need to.. a 5 or 6 hour server down a week is also beyond me.
2nd isnt the reason for Beta testing to fix the bugs before its release.. they knew they were putting out the patch.. they been working on if for god knows how long. so the simple thing here.. lets see.. let the beta tester run the patch frist.. and see what happens..

I just checked a realm status web site and i was wondering why more US realms are off line than other places?
Aigarius Oct 15th 2008 12:26AM
Wow, the Realm Status page is working? That is so cool!
adeeil Oct 14th 2008 11:28PM
FAIL by blizzard.
Priestess Oct 14th 2008 11:30PM
Seriously guys, its not the BUGS in the patch that is doing this, its the fact that almost every single player in the game is trying, or has tried, to log on at the same time.
yes it sucks but if everyone just stops logging in (or trying to) the servers will fix and then everyone can go back on again.
but go ahead and keep blaming it on the fact that blizzard sucks and how much money they make and that they are lazy blah blah
:)

It appears that the problem is related to certain servers. Some servers are working fine it seems. I made some chars on others and had no problems.
Makaz Oct 14th 2008 11:32PM
i actually registered here because i was so pissed i had to post it some where and the wow forums won't even open
i wanna be mad at blizzard but a lot of the problems theyre facing now arent really under they're control
however i am pissed because this is one whole day of play time give me a one day refund i paid for this day and the servers aret even up

second reply on this because some of the comments are really unbelivable...
first of all its not 11 million people hammering the login screen, its only the whatever million north americans that got the patch already, the european servers are down for another 8 hours or so, no idea about the asian ones. they all definately have different login servers everyone is/will be hammering tho. as i said before it sounds like the login servers (to authenticate your username/password) are not causing the problem anyways, its the retrieving character list on the server itself and the disconnects.. this is a problem and why it cant be solved, no idea.
secondly this is not about "just make a master image and apply it to every server", there are databases behind it to track every quest you made and crap like that which now probably need to be checked for every character to make the achievements work. not to mention that they probably make database backups, hardware replacements and other changes. with the amount of stuff this patch changes its almost a new frontend on an existing but constantly changing game with the old database which has unique entries from 3 years playtime... go figure.
this does not mean i wont be pissed myself when i want to try out all the new stuff myself and the servers are up.. but at least i know why! because this is a damn good game and worth the money.. if you dont think so, just delete it and stop refreshing this page every 2 minutes.
Arbolamante Oct 14th 2008 11:47PM
Ok, but I got in twice and now can't get back in. My achievements have been checked, my quests dealt with, my BG tokens turned into currency. The facts are simple. We pay these folks millions - when my cable goes out, I complain. Why? Because I paid for this service already. Same thing here - we paid in full. Things should not be this bad. I anticipated some lag today, but this is nuts.
Bigeyedpanda Oct 14th 2008 11:37PM
I just love how they say that all realms are now online and playable when i still can't log onto to Burning Legion and the few friends I know that have say thats a mess. No portals out of shat, can't talk to or see npcs...etc.
Stuff happens but the lack of communication from Blizz is pretty crazy...although when shit hits the fan they always tend to do the same thing...
Numlock Oct 14th 2008 11:38PM
What I don't get is why the hell they haven't updated the info on the login screen in hours. How hard is that? Drag the cleaning lady behind a computer & let her type it out, if you're too busy ffs.
