Don't delete your 3.0.x patches just yet
Most of you have hopefully managed to get patched up to 3.0.2 by now, and fortunately it seems like the servers are stable enough that we can often get some playtime in (with last night being an exception, at least for my realm). If you have installed the patches, I have a word of advice from you, straight from Eyonix: Do not delete your 3.0.x patch files. You will need them when you install Wrath of the Lich King.
The reason for this is that the Wrath DVDs, having gone gold a week ago, contains an installer for patch 3.0.1, so after installing the Wrath client, you'll have to patch back up to 3.0.2 (will almost certainly be at least 3.0.3 by then, actually). So if you delete your patches now, you'll just have to re-download them on November 13th, and it's a good bet that that will not be a pleasant experience. Save your patches!

This may be a bit noobish of me but I've never deleted any patches - every time I go into the WoW files to just install an add on I'm worried I'm going to bugger something up and have to reinstall the whole bloody thing, patches n all. Which would be bad. So yeah, i won't be deleting patches anytime soon.

Noobish? That's one of the most sensible things to do. There's nothing worse than having to download a huge full patch again because you had to reinstall WoW.

Yea, thanks for making us aware. I always delete my patches when they're installed, to save some room, so this was nice to know, even though I'd probably just get them from mirrors anyway (Damn you, Blizzard Downloader).
Pretty stupid that we have to re-patch though.. Did this happen with the release of TBC too?

I had to do a system search for the files in the screenshot because I had no idea where the background downloader had put them, didn't remember if I deleted them from the desktop or something.
Turns out I hadn't, it stuck them here (I use Vista):

I see people complaining "Oh blizzard's server's are so unstable and we are paying for a beta test." Yes its unstable and frustrating, but seriously what can blizzard do?
I don't think its realistic to expect a perfect, 100% bug free rollout of anything this big, especially when going up from a v1.x to v2.0 or 2.x to v3.0. How could have blizzard tested a million plus live accounts all acting independently? What is YOUR solution to creating a bug free rollout? Hire 1,000,000 plus beta testers? Or even 35,000 to simulate a populated realm, maybe 100,000 to recreate a battleground/arena environment? That's more people than most giant companies in the world have. I think some people need some more perspective on this.

I'm glad someone at WoW Insider has finally acknowledged the instability still going on with the servers-- for some of us (here's looking at you, Stormstrike battlegroup) the game has been all but unplayable since the patch, going down every 60-90 minutes during peak times.

You're not alone out there, petey boy. Ruin's been a bit of a mess too, though I think a CHUNK of the problem is all the people flooding the Scarlet Monestary for Chuckles the Horseman are overloading the ability of the servers to create instances. Elune, specifically. :-(

I think instability is an understatement. Instances were fully down most of today - unacceptable!

Wow, way too late. I delete them almost immediately after install, and I'm way too lazy/our internets suck too much for it to do this.
Personally, I don't think it will make a large difference.

Well, you'll have to re-download the patches on install, which takes longer (using the downloader, quite a bit longer). That's it.

Blizzard obviously down-sized their servers over the summer since people stopped playing the game to go play AoC and WAR.
Well, now everyoen is back and Blizzard was completely unprepared for the mass return ot the game because of the new patch and upcomming WOTLK.
I expect some compensation (free days) for this mess. Blizzard usually complys when they screw up like this.

I don't think blizzard scaled down their servers since WAR and AoC came out. Why would they when they grew in numbers over that time, and their new x-pac is coming out in a couple months? Sometime last month I remember they had extended maintenance to upgrade servers for Wrath.
Do you seriously think blizzard didn't anticipate they would have mass numbers online at once? It amazes me when people assume the people running one of the world's most popular MMOs are a bunch of halfwits with no idea what is going on.
What they didn't anticipate was how achievements, pets, and new database issues would impact live realm performance. That is something you cannot test on a ptr.
We might get playtime but I doubt it - they usually don't if you can log on, no matter how laggy it is (I can't speak for realms that were taken down, mine were just laggy as hell)
