Quested mounts and forms to be trainable in Patch 3.0.3

According to the Patch 3.0.3 patch notes, the Druid Swift Flight Form, Paladin Charger, and Warlock Dreadsteed spells will soon become trainable. Before you all celebrate (or throw out invectives...), it should be noted that these spells will only become available at a level above the minimum required level to obtain the mounts or form and will require the appropriate riding skill. Swift Flight Form will be trainable at Level 71 and require Artisan or 300 Riding skill, while both the Charger and Dreadsteed will become available at Level 61 and require Journeyman or 150 Riding skill.

This means that players will still need to pony up for the cash required to train for the riding skill, which means an affordable 480-600 Gold for the land mounts and a not-quite-as-affordable 5,000 Gold for the epic flying skill. If you would like to get the satisfaction of doing some of the coolest quest lines in the game, you can check out the Dreadsteed guide on WoWwiki and our guides for the Paladin Charger for both the Alliance and the Horde. If you've got that 5,000 to plunk down -- which our very own Dan O'Halloran has been penny-pinching to avoid -- you can check out the epic flight form, too. And why not? You might even get a shot at getting one of the coolest ground mounts ever. If anything, doing the quest will grant you the mount a whopping one full level ahead of everyone else!

I'm not pissed, only a little saddened. The fight for the lock epic is, well, EPIC. Waves upon waves of imps, and felguards attacking you. It's one of the greatest 5 man experiences in WoW I think there is, and it will sadly be a thing of the past.

This game is on its way out. It's past its prime. Some of the best content in the game (the warlock quest) is getting flushed out rather than updated for newer players. What a bummer.

I fully agree. The warlock mount finale is amazing.

Having said that, I have also done the druid epic flight form chain, and that river race was one of the most fun experiences I have ever had in WoW!

Does anyone even really do those quests anymore, though?

Every warlock I've ever heard grabs a 70 who's got the mats and gets a run them thru to get the mount.

That quest is so last year it's ridiculous.

Content wise, this was one of my favorite quests. Yes, I did it all the way through. Yes, it bankrupt me. But it was pretty cool, being a soloing lock until that point for the most part, to have to interact with so many different professions, and get the help of so many different people. And the fight to get the mount is, like Robert M said, EPIC.

I tried to do the Warlock quest after BC. It was impossible to find a group. I know I speak for a lot of level 60 Pallys as well. We were always LFG trying to find people to do quest. It would have been easier to buy the race mount. I ended up shelling out anyway getting 2 friends to go but after 5 days of LFG I had to pay 2 70 locks that essentially "sell" their services to get other locks there mounts.

@Alizar,

Doesn't all the work and frustration for days in LFG make you appreciate your mount a little more? Dreadsteeds are a badge of honor, even if you wait until 70 to get them.

The mount is the badge because whether you are lvl 60 or lvl 70, you still had to complete the quests to do the summoning, even if you didnt take the reagents into dire maul yourself.

Grouping, soloing, however you get the mount, almost everyone has a story where they hit a wall of frustration to get their epics, whether they are pallies or locks, and part of that story is YOUR WoW experience. It means that even though the quests are homogenized for all locks, no 2 locks ever have the same experience while getting their mount.

I am a 70 who kept all my reagents and yes I can solo it now. If there is anyone who is I see looking for help to do the summoning, I make every effort to schedule a run for them if I can't do it right then. My only condition is that they ride around Elwynn naked on their mount after we are done.

Im going to agree with you. Right on.
Of course we all have our own opinion, but , there is So much more to the game then Epic Mount Quests...

Plus this is Karma...for every Pally or Lock to blurt out, " Ha! My mount is free!"...

I hear what your saying Robert, I agree the personal experiences are great. But you have to many negative experiences and the game isn't fun to play. I don't want to pay people to run me through instances or pay people to pass on squashlings. I might as well by my toons on Ebay in that case. And if youer doing that whats the point.

but of course, its not free, all of the lock and pally skills cost more when compared with other classes, so the cost of the mount is taken out over time. oh and apparently you can still do the quests for the mounts, this is just them throwing a bone to people who never were able to do them, or are rich enough to just go out and buy their riding skill at 60 and 70.

First, the level 40 mounts, then the difficulty of leveling, now this. I worked hard to get my Dreadsteed. I can understand that they want to push people into the newer content faster but this is just helping people skip some amazing older content. I do not like this idea at all.

I never bothered to do the epic quest for my lock (which I leveled to 70 and used a PvP epic kodo mount instead) because of the costs behind it, so knowing that I can go back and buy it is refreshing. Kinda sad knowing I missed out on what sounds like an awesome quest, but not sad that I missed out on trying to run instances people just weren't doing anymore.

Cost should not be a factor. Most people I know used materials from another warlock who had gathered the most expensive components. Regardless, I would go back and do it again just for the cool experience, it was a great fight and one custom made for a warlock who knows what they are doing.

You will, of course, miss out on some of the stuff that comes with. For example, the Blood Elf Paladin charger quest also gives you the blood elf tabard, and the Swift Flight Form quest line give you the flying speed boost trinket.

Wait, I thought the Druid epic flight form quest required riding 300 - and thus an initial 5000g outlay. Is that not the case? And will the quests remain as an alternative to training?

Yes, even the current quest requires you to have riding 300 (and that initial 5000g outlay that goes with it) before you can start the quest. I haven't seen a definitive answer on whether the quest will remain as an alternative to training, but I'd be shocked if they didn't, so they should still be there if you want to go the "hardcore" route and/or experience the epicness of the quests.

That said, re: the Swift Flight Form trinket obtained via the druid quest line, it has already been horribly nerfed to the point of worthlessness (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=32481) in preparation for the death of Riding Crops and the like, so there's not much value to it at all. That said, I'd still go after Anzu on any additional druids I roll before the quest line just rocks.

It's unfortunate that thy're changing these things but it's because there's no reason for the higher tier players to be in these areas any more.

All the 70+ will be in nothrend constantly, just as all the 60+ were in Outlands. Blizz needs to reuse some of their old content to make it applicable for us to be back in Azeroth again. That way someone might be in WPL to hear a lonely pally crying for a group to help him get his mount.
