Breakfast Topic: Too much politics in your WoW?

I am on record in preferring no outside world topics in my MMO chat and that particularly applies to politics, but what with a major real world political event happening today, politics have been a hot topic in Azeroth. Cinnabunz writes in that he's tired of politics taking over Trade Chat and I can totally empathize with him, even though the Trade Chat in my server has mostly been filled up with "I put my [insert link here] in your mom's [insert link here]" for the past couple of weeks.
Last week, I got an invite from a complete stranger to a guild of Ron Paul supporters. Regardless of my opinions as to who should be running the country, I don't want to deal with it in my favorite form of escape. But I know that many of you consider WoW part of your social circle and look forward to chatting about real world topics with your guildies and server-mates.
So does political chat belong in Trade Chat? Does it ruin the immersion too much for you or do you feel that something this important should invade even the virtual world? How long do you think it will last after today?

Politics are pretty much in the back of our minds, in Greymane. There isn't much talk about it, much as talk about WOTLK is coming to doom us all.

No but really my server has 2x the alli as horde, and as an alli I feel like we have a lot of 14 year old idiots on my side. We can't win a BG, and we can't stop talking about chuck norris, murlocs, and politics.

On the broader topic of RW stuff in MMO chat...I think that unless you're on an RP server, why wouldn't you discuss things? I get the whole immersion thing but...when you put a bunch of people together you can't really expect them to not talk about what's going on in life.

It is quite normal in game what is meant to have fun with others in community. People not play monthy fee from MMO games to not seek social aspect from it. Most of time.

The audience. By using Trade you get everyone who's in all the capital cities, plus all those in Shatt. General only gets you a limited audience.

I consider that a bit harsh unless it's clearly stated in your guild rules.
I discourage overt political commentary in guild chat but I don't prohibit it. To me, it's the same as bashing any group you don't like whether it's sexual orientation, football team, ethnicity or hair color. The guild is to be a welcoming place for anyone to play. There are a million ways to state a dislike or disagreement of a topic which will bring about a consideration of what you're saying. But you only get one shot when you make a jerk of yourself.

It was becoming a problem with our passionate members so, our guild has made a "no religion or politics" rule for G chat and prefer not to see it in trade due to the guild name attached to the members name. It'll be over soon, so I can endure the trade chat for now. It definately is better than the anal spam on hyjal.

I dont have a problem with real world topics being discussed in game, even on RP servers. What bothers me is the immaturity of people on the topics. I understand that a lot of WoW players are younger and more immature but sheesh. Some of the stuff people say makes you want to call their parents and ask them if they know what their kid is saying.

I can't do anything about trade chat, but I have completely banned any political discussion in my guild's chat.
It's just trouble waiting to happen.
