The Care and Feeding of Warriors: Heavy
I have spent 600 gold on respecs in the past week. Yes, you read correctly. While leveling to 80, I've been respeccing constantly. The reason is simple: I love fury, I love Titan's Grip, I have a ball running around with 2h weapons, but protection is the best leveling spec for warrior right now.
I want those of you who remember the Burning Crusade launch to read that sentence again. If you needed any proof that it's a whole new game now, then let this be your proof: protection is the best leveling spec for warriors right now. It's fast, fun and powerful. These are not things I ever expected to say about prot spec.
Now, I've been tanking for a long time now, and I've been prot since I hit 70 in TBC. It's always been excellent for tanking, but unlike other tank classes, it dedicated all of its tanking power to static threat moves and had weak multi-mob tanking abilities (I detailed what I saw as the problems of the class as tanks here) but all of that is gone now. Everything I wrote about as a weakness of protection? Gone.
Multi-mob tanking? We're strong. Damage output? Very good. Threat? Holding steady. Our health bars? You can't kill me until I run out of tricks. I have solo'd or 2 manned (with my lovely hunter wife and her pet) group quests that call for up to five people. (To be fair, I had 200 health left on one of them.) My love for DPS spec TG is still there, but if you want to finish a quest fast, nothing beats being able to pull an entire room of undead onto yourself, pop shield block, and know that they are going to kill themselves beating on you.
Protection is the best leveling spec in the game right now, good damage, excellent survivability, and moments when you revenge and shield slam for 2k back to back and things disintegrate. Today we'll talk about a protection DPS build at 70, 75 and 80. It's a strong build for grinding and can tank instances, but is not a raid tanking build for reasons we'll explain as we go.
Before we discuss the specs, however, a quick note on gear: I'm gearing for grinding/questing in a mix of DPS and tanking gear. Basically, I'm going for shield block value as high as I can get it while keeping a good mix of offensive stats like crit, hit and expertise, and trying to do as much of the shield block as I can through high strength on gear. I still have a few pure SBV pieces like my Coren's Lucky Coin equipped, but in general the priority is strength/SBV, crit, hit/expertise. Since I'm still wearing a few high SBV tanking pieces (and some other drops that are just plain high in stam) my health isn't low for this strategy. At present in defensive stance I'm sitting at about 1700 AP, 950 SBV, 16.5% crit. The spec I decided on I didn't actually choose until level 73, but we'll look at a level 70 version of it now. First, let's tick off the really big omissions of this spec: it lacks Anticipation, a solid talent that you wouldn't want to raid tank without. It's also missing Improved Bloodrage, which is one of my favorites, and both Improved Spell Reflection (awesome in a group) and Improved Disciplines. Finally, it lacks Vigilance, which is very nice for 5 man and raid tanking. It also lacks Safeguard, and maybe someday I'll care about that talent. I eagerly anticipate the impassioned defenses of Safeguard in the comments. I only wish I could share your fervor, but to my mind Safeguard lacks the one thing it would need to belong in the new prot tree, which is any good reason to take it at all.
Look for my upcoming book, I hate Safeguard, in bookstores soon.
Anyway, what does the spec have? Obviously I rocketed up the spec as fast as I could to get Shockwave, Damage Shield, Warbringer and Critical Block. The damage heart of the tree is the triad of Critical Block, Incite and Improved Revenge. Yes, Imp Revenge is worth taking, as it increases the damage of your revenges by 20% fully talented. You'll see a nice damage boost to your critical hits with Revenge, believe me, between all the strength you're packing and this talent. (Revenge gets a good deal of benefit from your AP now, after all.) Meanwhile, Shield Mastery raises your block value, Gag Order jacks up your Shield Slam damage by 10%, and Critical Block raises your Shield Slam crit chance by up to 15%. Incite raises Heroic Strike, Cleave and Thunder Clap critical hit chance by 15%. At this point, with a 16% critical hit chance, you're looking at 31% chance to crit with just about every ability you use while still sitting in defensive stance for the benefits of Improved Defensive Stance. A 100% chance to go enraged every time you block? Yes please. This gets even better once you get Enraged Regeneration. Pull 10 mobs, pop Shield Block, then use Enraged Regeneration and heal while they're beating themselves half to death on your armor and you are thunder clapping and shockwaving in their faces.
Now, you don't get ER until 75. So let's look at a level 75 version of the spec. Building on the previous version we now have ourselves Impale in the arms tree. Why did we want Impale? Because every time one of those various abilities we have talent boosted to above 30% citical hit chance actually crits, it will hit 20% harder. Shield Slamming for 2k on a crit? Now you're critical hit with shield slam is 2400. We spent five points up the arms tree, and now all those lovely critical hits we're doing, our cleaves and thunder claps and shield slams and revenges, they're all hitting 20% harder. Not to mention that we get Improved Charge, which we can use in combat thanks to Warbringer, and get more rage back from it.
You can absolutely, and easily, tank a five man instance with this spec: I've tanked up to Gundrak in it. (Technically I've tanked Gundrak with an extra point in it, since I was 76 when I did it.) Not much of an issue with rage, threat's solid, no complaints from the healers (I did throw on more pure tanking gear so my crit was lower, admittedly). While it's definitely lacking in some nice abilities for raid tanking, it puts out very, very nice threat via trhe damage potential of the spec.
The level 80 version of the spec is just the level 75 version with an extra 5% crit from Cruelty. This is where I'm heading now: in two levels I'll probably see if this is good enough for heroics or if I have to drop damage/threat abilities for more survivability. If I do I may go with this variant, which puts those five points into Anticipation instead. I could peel points from arms, too, but man I really don't want to lose Impale. I'm currently using the Glyph of Revenge and Glyph of Heroic Strike as my major glyphs, with the Glyph of Charge, Glyph of Bloodrage and Glyph of Thunder Clap as my minors. I may take the TC glyph out, I'm not really sure I need more range on that ability.
Next week we'll probably talk about arms leveling specs, because I owe arms some love, and it is a very solid spec right now.

Matt,
Your math on impale is slightly off. It's +20% more critical damage bonus. So, the crit damage bonus goes from 100% to 120% of the normal damage. This means your crit hits for 220% of the normal hit. In your example of crit for 2k without impale, means the normal hit would have been 1k, and impale will make it 2.2k (not 2.4k). Impale is still really good, and will improve your dps. It's just not quite THAT good.
For more on this, see impale article on wowwiki.

I've been using a (crappy) variation of dps-prot since wrath came out. I've got lots of T6 level dps gear (I was my guild's only raiding fury warrior ftw!). I've been doing pretty good, but I think I'll give this a go.
a) it gives me more reason to take some new gear that has lots more block/expertise
and
b)it sounds like lots of fun.
I highly recommend finding a girl, getting married, and making her play the game with you as a discipline priest. It. Rules. No down time AT ALL. both of us have not eaten any food/drink except for buffs and achievements. The only thing slowing us down is my reading speed on the quests.
Dyslexia ftl :(

priest spec-girl friend/wife ftw... one day I may be so lucky.

LOL I made my fiance play a healie drood. I don't have this exat build, but am prot. He actually likes it, and we fly through instances.
Having a pocket healer is awesome.

There's not much talk about Bladestorm around these parts. You make it sound like the tree options are Prot for tanking (or grinding, now) and Fury for support DPS.
I know that dual-wielding scales better with attack power, but there's something to be said for the flurry of rapid attacks that comes with a series of whirlwinds. I recently brought my old troll out of retirement and dusted off the old arms spec, since they've made the nice changes to slam, and I was surprised with the utility of bladestorm in area-grinding.
Often, one press of one button (after the requisite Charge) would dispatch four equal-level enemies in six seconds (compared to Prot-grinding, which is a constant stream of thunder claps, shockwaves, revenges, free shield slams [from talents], free heroic strikes [from glyph] and cleaves [when the rest are on cooldown]. If you're experiencing any sort of slowdown or environmental lag, this can save a lot of frustration.

I have a question. My warrior is in all DPS/PVP gear S2+ in fury with TG. Would the prot spec still be viable with all of this dps gear and nothing with SBV? I have the S2 shield as well.
Bjara Nov 21st 2008 8:17PM
I am also wondering about this. This article has pretty much sold me on trying out prot (which I haven't done since level 15 or so), but I'm really not looking forward to finding lots of new prot gear. I was dumb and vendored all of the Northrend plate rewards that weren't DPS.
syntyche Nov 21st 2008 5:34PM
Nice article, going to give this a shot this weekend. Can you give us an idea of your standard single mob or even multi mob ability rotation?
Caleb Nov 21st 2008 5:39PM
No.
Arms is the best for leveling. Rend ticks for around 1000 and sudden death is amazing. I have soloed group quests just because my DPS is so damn high. Once you get enraged regeneration at 75 you'll need to bandaid about once every 15 mobs or so. Not exaggerating.
Kody Nov 21st 2008 5:36PM
I suspect Prot would do good in PvP too. Any chance of you guys testing this out?
I might just level a Prot Warrior just for PvP...
Elealla Nov 21st 2008 5:43PM
A very interesting read, thanks Matthew.
Anyone have any ideas whether prot spec is handy lvling at lower levels or is it relying on the late talents for dmg output? I have a lvl 27 warrior and, while prot looks great fun, im worried that it's gonna be slower going than Fury or Arms. Any ideas?

Adressing a few people here;
Agent StanSmith - About your reading quest speed issue, try the addon Questhelper, no need to read :) (hey that rhymed).
Saelorn said - The author of this article mentioned that he will be talking about the Arms tree next time, so no he's not saying Arms isn't viable, and I believe he's saying Prot is the best leveling spec, not the only viable one.
I for one have always seen it like this; every spec is viable to an extent if you spend your talents well and use the build effectively, if you do that I find it hard to see said spec being completely useless. Lastly it's more about what playstyle you prefer and enjoy, if you like the spec it's likely that you will level faster, seeing you're having a fun time with the spec (not bored to death cause you can't stand the build, that won't help even if the build is the "best" spec.)
Caleb - Many ppl seem to forget that while both Arms and Fury may (and I'm sure) be viable for leveling as it is, Prot saves downtime and saving downtime means faster leveling. Tada, I feel so smart. Say what you like but Prot will be superior in lesser downtime as it has a lot more defense based capabilities.
Elealla - Here's an idea, respec and try/see for yourself.:D Things like these are always best tried personally, as you can get a real feel of what -you- think about it.
Author - To the author thanks for this! Not long ago I made a warrior which is currently lv 67, however when Wotlk arrived I put him on standby to level my Rogue main and my DK. Now while I leveled my Warr and loved it, I really wanted to go Prot. What was the problem with that? Well I had no Prot based gear, I was starting to get a grip and feel of the Fury rotations and abilities, and well I loved Titan's Grip. So I told myself that when Wotlk arrived I would most likely try out Prot.
Thanks for this, this is like a definite answer of what really is the most effective leveling spec now, while also fun, and you even made a Prot build for us so we don't have to decide. I want to have fun which is why I wanted Prot in the first place (that and to tank), I want effectiveness to get fast to 80 so I can lvl my other chars, and you made a build I can use, oh and the gear won't be an issue either as 70-80 will give me that.
You made me wanna lvl my warrior rather then my Rogue/DK, gief prot naow! Thanks ^^

I like this spec quite a bit -- I've been playing with something similar to it, and it is wonderful.
However, I would strongly suggest trying out going 2/5 Cruelty and 3/3 Deep Wounds for your level 80 spec.
I have been using a slow (2.6 speed) weapon a lot recently, both for tanking and soloing. Not only does it make my devastates hit noticeably harder, but it also makes Deep Wounds tick for a decent amount. Since your Thunderclap and Shockwave have an independent chance to crit on every target, and every time you get hit, your Damage Shield has a chance to crit, you can wind up getting a whole lot of additional damage out of Deep Wounds.
I know I might get flamed for suggesting it, but I highly recommend trying it out for yourself and seeing what you think.

I played a Prot warrior in the "dark ages" of WoW. Pre-TBC. Everything from Stratholme to Blackwing Lair to ZG to MC... I was Prot. And I hated it.
Well, that's a bit too strong... I didn't HATE it, but I wound up swearing off my warrior once TBC hit. I couldn't take it any longer; Prot just wasn't fun. It was a necessity, to raid, to help my guild... but I could only take so much. When I needed to tank in TBC, I brought in a Prot Paladin or a Feral Druid, and both were far, far more fun to play as a tank than the Warrior ever was.
I can't tell you how much of a joy it is, playing my warrior again in Wrath... having him go sword and board again... and having a blast the entire time. Blizzard FINALLY got it.
Sean Nov 21st 2008 6:55PM
Well well well. Every passing day makes it harder and harder to not respec as prot.
I went from 70-74 as Arms, and love how the bleed effects have really changed the way the spec works. I LOVE how it's pve viable now, with Bladestorm being's an AWESOME i win button.
at 75 I got the reraged war axe or whatever it's called and tried out fury and TG, replacing some of my gems for hit. I speced 3/3 precision and had only about 170 hit, and at times i did noticed a couple misses in a row it seems to have even better upkeep than my arms build did. I didn't have any hp restoring talents in my leveling builds instead going for maxing out weapon dps etc etc.
Tanking as Arms through the 4 or so dungeons has surprised me as I seem to be doing a %#$#load of damage when im doing it.
Basically the only thing holding me back is my fear of lack of tanking-orientated gear. I've kept most of the blue quest rewards from northrend that I've gotten and then whatever drops from karazhan. Otherwise I've got 4/5 s4 and a king's defender and s2 shield(s3? waste of points:P)
Wall of text, I know, question is: Do you think I should spec prot wearing 4/5 s4 and using a king's defender and s2 shield? I guess I have no choice but to try it tonight as Matt's given us a good build.
Stefan C Nov 21st 2008 9:23PM
I'm lvl 79 right now and have been lvling strictly in prot as my warrior, NO Downtime, even more so no downtime when i hit 75. Amazing how easy i can just aoe and kill around 20 mobs and end up with half hp. sitting at 23k hp now

To reiterate other comments, ANY ADVICE ON ROTATION USING THIS SPEC?
I tanked pre and early BC, but gave it up for the obvious leveling implications. I'm excited to try this out, even if I don't have much starting block gear. Thanks for the article.
Matt Nov 22nd 2008 8:51AM
It's a bit tough to work out a rotation for prot spec, as what you should use depends on what's available. So here's a list of priorities:
1. Revenge. You should be using this whenever it's up. If you have the glyphs of revenge and heroic strike (which you should!), toss in a HS every time you revenge. Since HS is a "next attack" skill, a simple macro will do the trick:
/cast Revenge
/cast Heroic Strike
2. Shield Slam. Use when available and when you can't use revenge. Works great in conjunction with shield block (see below).
3. Devastate/Shockwave/Concussion blow. I set these approximately equal in priority (assuming you're fighting just one mob) for this reason: Shockwave and concussion blow do a lot of damage, but devastate is great since, although its damage is mediocre, it can proc sword and board.
Some other notes. Here's a really nice combo provided you have the rage (which you probably will): Shield block, Shield bash, revenge/HS (if available, see macro above), Shield Slam.
Here's why this is cool. Shield block increases block chance and block value, so using it means that (1) you'll get to use revenge very soon and (2) your shield slam will hit like a truck. If you're lucky enough that your revenge procs sword and board, then there's another fat shield slam. I like to use shield bash since it now dazes the target, and heroic strike now does increased damage against dazed targets. My heroic strike crits for about 2k using the s2 sword if I apply a daze first.
Against multiple mobs, shield block really shines due to damage shield, and of course shockwave and thunderclap take a much higher priority.
Matt Nov 22nd 2008 9:33AM
The "combo" I listed above isn't actually the best one--too early to think I guess. This is even better:
Shield block --> shield slam --> shield bash --> revenge/HS --> shield slam.
It's better to use shield slam right after shield block since this makes it possible (provided you have enough rage) to get in 2 shield slams while the shield block buff is up (6 second CD on slam, 10 second block buff).
If you have *a lot* of rage, you can also queue up heroic strikes with all those attacks too. I have several macros for this--an example is something like this:
/cast Shield Slam
/cast [mod:shift] Heroic Strike
That macro will try to use shield slam whenever you press it, and will also queue up a HS if you hold shift while pressing it.
stevens.ce Nov 22nd 2008 6:42PM
Wow, thanks for the rotation information - that was REALLY helpful! I'm going to respec tonight - I have long missed sword and board style play, but just couldn't stomach old protection leveling.
