WoW Insider Show Episode 96: Tips aplenty

We went live with the WoW Insider Show yet again last Saturday, and this one was a good one: not only did Turpster and Lesley Smith join us, but we were also graced with the presence of Michelle Madison, of the podcasts Warcraft Outsiders and Video Game Outsiders. She was kind enough to make it past all of our inside jokes (she agreed it was prounounced "Fah-jord," which is as it should be) and mixed it up with some great discussion, including about the Midsummer Fire Festival, the new Tier 9 gear coming to the game (and the lore figures they named it after), and whether including quest objectives on the official map dumbs things down too much (spoiler: we basically said no).It was an excellent show, and you can tune in to hear it by following any of the links below, or subscribing to our feed right over on iTunes itself (that guarantees you get the new shows every single Monday). Okay, I've been listening to the podcast for several months now, and I really don't understand why you think fjord is pronounced . Is this some sort of inside joke? You pullin' everyone's chains? If not, you guys are wrong.

The phonetic clearly says [fyawrd, fyohrd; Norw. fyohr, fyoor]. The "j" is silent. There's even a little button you can click that will play the word for you with someone saying it. What's the deal?

It started about 20-15 episodes back when Mike mispronounced it. Then someone wrote in complaining, thus solidifying it in Mike and Turpster's (by extension everyone else on the podcast) pronunciation of the word.

Would love to see an article on the proper pronunciation of the different zones in Northrend. If I have to hear one more guildie say Fah-jord, Wiremrest, or Youldoher I'm gonna scream. It's Fiord (Fjord), Wormrest (Wyrmrest), and Ul-du-war (Ulduar). Dipthongs people, dipthongs and umlauts!
(Spelling doesn't count, but pronunciation does)

First off Mike, please check your facts. There is no way you have the Brewfest achievement done. No one can have it done. Dalaran was not around for the event last year and besides no one that I know got credit for the Coren Direbrew kills. So please do not propagate that this was possible.
I think I am done listening to this podcast. You and the crew come in unprepared and half-cocked on information. This is more like self-promotion then a informational podcast.
Like the above posters have said, someone clearly asks for clarification on a word pronunciation and you continue to propagate the myth that it is said fah-jord, which we know it is not, at least not in American English.
So far the only contributors I have enjoyed listening too are Michael Sacco, Chase Christian, and Matthew Rossi. These three have the knowledge of the class and the game and never rely on conjecture, guessing, or outright misinformation. There needs to be more of them and less of the comic relief.
I know this will very well be down ranked for the criticism of the show, however I feel better having voiced my opinion.

I enjoy the podcasts, but some sound balancing would be a good thing. I have to have my hand poised on the volume dial to turn it quickly way up or way down based on who is talking.

Holy crap, people, it's a joke. Mike, Turpster, and everyone on the podcast KNOWS it's pronounced "fee-yord." The joke is from a couple of months ago, back when BRK was a semi-regular on the podcast, and it's stuck ever since.
And to the above poster, most people should know by now that the Wow.com podcast is more for laughs and general fun than a strict book-learning angle. There are other podcasts you can go to (or, ffs, other blogs/websites) for the detailed patch notes and how it applies to this class or that, and even to find out what this change or that change means to the players at large. Mike, Turpster, and the guests joke around and then toss in some info for flavor.
All this whining about the podcast is utterly idiotic as it, more often than not, misses the entire point about what is being criticized. If you want a podcast that reads to you the entirety of breaking news and patch notes in hopes of draining every drop of info from it as hard as it can, go elsewhere. If you want a podcast where Turpster makes fun of people, Mike knowingly mispronounces words, and various guests have fun along with them, Wow.com has it.
The WoW player base never fails to make me die a little inside.

Ok just to clear somethings up,
It is too pronounced fa-jord! (yes omfg it is an inside joke! The show has been running the gag for a long time now, just like the Matt Damon running joke with Jimmy Kimmel. Not posative but I'm pretty sure it originated with BRK. And if you don't know who BRK is so help you...jk but seriously!)
As for the Brewfest thing goes, Mike was talking about the brew of the month issue that everyone was complaining about. He has his membership to it already.
As for the "professionalism", the show has a guy named Turpster. This is WoW we're talking about for Tom Cruise sake. And from what I've seen their guests actually show up and they have around 400 viewers during a live show, and the are the most downloaded WoW podcast. Now I'm not posative but I'd saw they may be doing something right. And have you every seen fox news? They have sooooo many mistakes on that show. They cover WoW news and have a good time doing it.
And just so this is a true WoW post, Horde sucks, Ally sucks, I voted for Nader!

Actually, the guy the Horde Warrior Set is named after, Grom Hellscream, is Garrosh's
father.
Garrosh Hellscream is the idiot Thrall has to deal with right now.
But yeah, Turpster's right, the warrior set should definitely be named after Saurfang.
He's a much more awesome character than both Hellscreams (who are both douches to be honest, Grom just the "Killed Mannoroth" bonus), I guess the only reason it isn't is because he isn't that big a outside-WoW Lore character.
Garona isn't even in WoW (yet?) but she's a big lore character and the set is named after her so I guess that makes some sense.
Still, it could be named after Broxigar or whatever, maybe even Doomhammer (he used a half-plate armor but afaik he was a warrior, wasn't he?).
Also - why is the Alliance Warrior set named after Wrynn?! He may be the latest imporant lore character but don't tell me he's the most important, prominent warrior. What about the whole goddamn lot of Bronzebeard, Anvilmar or whatever Dwarves?
The biggest heroes of the humans are paladins afaik, the biggest heroes of the dwarves are warriors afaik, so why name the warrior set after a human?

They're coming back -- I'm working with Joystiq to get the audio all fixed, since they seem to have a nice setup going somehow. Everything that's been sent to us will be played eventually, sorry for the delay on that.
