About the Apple Watch® Series 8 with GPS (41mm)

Emily S.

Motivation and more

I picked up an Apple Watch last year because I wanted a little extra motivation to get moving. After a year and a half, my home workouts had been getting a bit stale. I thought setting daily goals and tracking activity with the Watch might inspire me to shake up my routine. It did that, but it also added a lot of convenience that I hadn't anticipated. I can stay in touch with family, control music and audiobooks, turn on smart lighting, and a whole lot more — right from my wrist.

I can stay in touch with family, control music and audiobooks, turn on smart lighting, and a whole lot more — right from my wrist.

Apple Watch fitness tracking

Apple Watch lets you keep an eye on your pace and track advanced metrics like heart rate zones.

A great fitness partner

If you know anyone with an Apple Watch, you've likely heard them mention "closing their rings." When you set up your Watch, you select Move, Exercise, and Stand goals that you want to hit each day. Each one is represented by a ring, so it's easy to track your progress. You can change these goals whenever you want. And if you're using Apple Fitness+ on Apple TV, you can see your stats — ring progress, heart rate, and more — on the big screen.

Apple Watch can often detect when you start a workout, and it will ask if you want to record it. Or you can start one manually from a list of available options — there's everything from archery to yoga. As you exercise, your Watch will record all the details, including date, time, outdoor temperature, location, heart rate, and calories burned.

You earn cool badges for trying different workouts, completing monthly challenges, and more. You can also share activity and compete with friends for added motivation.

Health and wellness

All current Apple Watches will measure your heart rate on demand and in the background over the course of your day. This is great for tracking your cardio fitness. You can also get notified if your heart rate is irregular or unusually high or low. This Series 8 also offers temperature sensing, blood oxygen measurements, and ECGs.

The Mindfulness app offers an easy way to take a few moments to focus and center yourself. When you're feeling stressed or anxious, it can be helpful to start one of these "Breathe" or "Reflect" sessions.

Stay connected

I was worried that having the Watch would make me look at my phone more, but I think the opposite is true. I tend to keep my ringer off, so I would often pick up my phone to check for messages and then end up down a rabbit hole in some app for longer than I care to admit. But now, when my iPhone is nearby (or I'm on Wi-Fi), I can receive texts, calls, and alerts on my Watch, so there's no reason to constantly check my phone. This has helped me catch several important calls I would've otherwise missed.

Extend your iPhone's reach

Apple Watch can also harness the power of your iPhone in loads of other ways. I love that if I'm walking the dogs or on a hike with my family, I can start an "outdoor walk" on my Watch to see a map of the exact route we took in the Fitness app afterward. Or if I'm navigating a new place, I can follow the directions from my Watch, instead of staring down at my phone like an obvious tourist.

I can also control my smart lights and other HomeKit devices, activate my iPhone's camera, and control the music playing on my AirPlay-compatible speakers. And I regularly ask Siri on my Watch to find my phone when I can't remember where I put it down in my house.

Personalize it

The Watch app on your iPhone has a "Face Gallery" with a wide variety of options, and almost every single one offers a range of customizations. Can't decide? Download several and swipe left or right on your watch face to change things up. I like to alternate between a face with pet photos and a modular face that shows my ring progress and the weather forecast.

Your Series 8 Watch comes with a durable sport band for small/medium wrists, but there are lots of other options available (sold separately). It's quick and easy to swap your band to match your outfit or activity.

With the Apple Watch, you have a partner that provides feedback as you workout, as well as instant health metrics, including heart rate, ECG, and body temperature. In addition, Series 8 introduces Crash Detection and Fall Detection that can automatically connect you with emergency services. The Watch is equipped with GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Apple Watch Series 8 comes with a magnetic fast charger with a USB-C cable. No USB-C power adapter is included.

Design: The Watch Series 8 is equipped with the new S8 SiP 64-bit dual-core processor, the Apple W3 wireless chip, and 32 GB of storage. It has a midnight (black) 41mm aluminum case made from 100% recycled aerospace-grade alloy. It includes a midnight (black) fluoroelastomer Sport Band. The Small/Medium (S/M) band fits wrists from 5.118" to 7.087" (130 to 180mm) in circumference. The Watch is water resistant down to 50 meters (164 feet), which means it can be used for shallow water activities like pool or lake/ocean swimming. It is not recommended for scuba diving, water skiing, or high-velocity water activities. It is also IP6X certified dust resistant. Case Dimensions: Width 1.378", Height 1.614 (41mm), Depth 0.421". Weight 1.125 ounces.

Display: The Apple Watch Series 8 has a touch display with an area of 904 sq mm and a resolution of 352 x 430 pixels. The tough Ion-X glass protects the display from cracking or breaking. It has an always-on Retina OLED display with up to 1000 nits brightness. In the Settings Menu, you can adjust the brightness, as well as the size of the text.

Rechargeable Battery: The watch has a built-in rechargeable 282 mAh Lithium-ion rechargeable battery. A fully charged battery should give you up to 18 hours of battery life. It comes with a magnetic fast charger with a 39" (1 meter) USB-C cable. The fast charging "puck" magnetically attaches to the back of the watch case for optimum charging. There is no USB-C charging wall adapter included in the box. The watch is compatible with Power Delivery (PD) charging adapters which charge the battery at a faster rate than traditional charging. Using an Apple 20W charging adapter, the watch charges from 0 to 80% in about 45 minutes, and from 0 to 100% in 75 minutes.

Connectivity: The Apple Watch Series 8 is equipped with Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n - 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands) for connecting to your home or office network. It also has Bluetooth version 5.3 for staying connected to your iPhone, or pairing with your favorite wireless speaker or headphones. The watch features multiple international geo-location systems for accurately determining your location. It is equipped with GPS (U.S), GLONASS (Russia), Galileo (European), QZSS (Japan), and BeiDou (China).

Built-in Apps: The Apple Watch has dozens of built-in applications that can enhance your life. The Apple App Store provides access to tens of thousands of other apps for virtually anything you want your watch to do. Health and Fitness-related apps include: Blood Oxygen, Cycle Tracking, ECG, Heart Rate, Medications, Mindfullness, Sleep, Stopwatch, and Workout. Apps to organize your day include: Alarms, Calendar, Contacts, Find People/Devices/Items, Mail, Maps, Messages, Music, News, Phone, Photos, Podcasts, Remnders, Stocks, Voice memos, Wallet/Apple Pay, and Weather.

Siri: Siri, Apple's voice assistant, can be used to perform tasks and answer questions on the Apple Watch. You can use the phrase "Hey, Siri" to activate Siri, then speak your request. Siri must be connected to the internet, either through Wi-Fi or while connected to a nearby iPhone.

Accelerometer: The watch has a high-g accelerometer which monitors your movement while you wear it. It can detect how active you are during your day, prompting you to move when you've been sedentary for a period of time. As you exercise, the accelerometer can measure how hard you're working. It can even determine how often you stand or sit during the day. The watch's Activity Rings monitor your activity and shows your progress toward your daily goals for movement, exercise, or standing. Combined with an internal 3-axis gyroscope, the accelerometer's high-g capacity detects up to 256 Gs of impact, giving the Apple Watch the ability to detect when you are in an automobile accident or when you've taken a hard fall. The Crash Detection and Fall Detection features can be programmed to call emergency services, provide your location, and notify persons listed as your emergency contacts.

Note: For Crash and Fall Detection, your Apple Watch must have an internet connection, either via Wi-Fi or through Bluetooth when connected to a nearby iPhone.

Sleep: The Sleep app on the Apple Watch can help you meet your sleep goals for better health. You can create schedules, track your sleep, and view how long you spend in each sleep stage. Sleep Focus can help limit distractions before you go to bed, and while you're in bed, by turning off the watch display and turning on the Do Not Disturb feature. You can be reminded that it's time to go to bed, sound an alarm to wake you, and provide analysis of your night's sleep. While you sleep, the motion sensor can track your breathing rate, and estimate how much time you spend in REM, Core, and Deep Sleep. Your sleep history is available for 14 days.

Body Temperature Sensor: The Series 8 Watch has a new body temperature sensor that monitors your temperature while you sleep. The watch takes approximately 5 nights to determine your baseline wrist temperature, and monitors your temperature nightly for changes. This feature can be valuable for women's health, enabling you to more accurately predict and track your menstrual cycle and estimate the likely day of ovulation. Two temperature sensors -- one on the back crystal near your skin, and one just under the display-- sample your temperature every five seconds. Advanced algorithms calculate the aggregate temperature for each night, showing how it compares to your baseline temperature, and displaying your readings on a graph.

Workout App: The built-in Workout app can help you reach your fitness goals by helping you plan your workouts, track your progress, encourage you as you train, and display your results. Some of the features of the Workout app include:

  • Running: The app can provide new running metrics including analyzing your running form (stride length, ground contact time, vertical oscillation). Running Power displays the effort you put into your run, and the amount of power you're expending. The app automatically detects when you're running on a track, and can prompt you to begin a Track Workout, including choosing a lane, counting the laps you run, as well as your distance, time, and pace.
  • Race Route: If you frequently run or cycle the same route, you can compete against your last result, or best result.
  • Swimming: Swimmers can track your stroke count, length and lap times, and receive a SWOLF score of your workout. The app also detects when you're working out with a kickboard.
  • Heart Rate Zones: The Apple Watch can calculate your Heart Rate Zones during your workout to monitor your intensity. The HR Zones are based on your personized health data.
  • Multisport Workouts: For triathletes, the Watch uses auto-detection to switch between swimming, biking, and running segments. Details of each segment are automatically recorded, including the transition times between them.

Health: The Apple Watch Series 8 can help you stay healthy by keeping track of your health information. If you have certain health conditions, such as Diabetes or Heart Disease, you can enter your data into the Medical ID section of the Health App on your iPhone to make it available on the Apple Watch. If you share your Medical ID, this information can be sent to emergency services when you call or text 911 or use Emergency SOS. As you wear the watch, it monitors your heart rate, and alerts you when you have an irregular rhythm or high or low heart rate. You can enter information about the medication you are taking, and the watch will remind you when it's time to take your meds. It can even start a timer to make sure you wash your hands for at least 20 seconds, as recommended by global health organizations.

Fitness+: Apple Fitness+ is a subscription-based program using your Apple Watch and an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV. Thousands of video and audio workouts are available, including High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), strength training, Pilates, treadmill workouts, cycling, dance, core workouts, rowing, and walking. It also includes Yoga, Mindful Cooldowns, and Meditation. Workouts range from 5 minutes to 45 minutes in length, and new workouts and meditations are added weekly. You can participate anywhere you want, whether you're at home, in the gym, indoors or outdoors, and with or without equipment. You can modify each workout to match your level of fitness or ability. Subscriptions are available for $9.99 per month or $79.99 annually and can include up to five family members in a single subscription.

Wallet: The Wallet app on the Apple Watch lets you digitally store credit cards, identification, employee badges, tickets, vaccination records, and other records. If you use Apple Cash or Apple Pay on your iPhone, you can also set them up in the Apple Watch. Holding your Apple Watch near a contactless card reader when you make a purchase, the payment information is wirelessly transferred at checkout. The Wallet can also let you send money to friends, or requrest to receive money from them.

Remote Control: You can use the Apple Watch as a remote control for playing music loaded on your iPhone, or streamed from your phone. It can remotely take a picture on your iPhone camera, or can control your Apple TV. When wearing your watch, you can open your Mac computer without having to use a password.
