Medicare Eligibility and Enrollment

As you are approaching 65 or planning to retire soon, you may be wondering about your Medicare eligibility and when you can enroll. Like other types of health insurance, there are rules and requirements you must meet to participate in a Medicare plan. You also have specific enrollment periods, which are timeframes when you can enroll.

Retiring Past Age 65

If you are working past age 65 and are covered by your employer’s health plan when you turn 65, you don’t have to enroll in Original Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period. You can enroll when that employment or coverage ends without incurring a penalty. This Special Enrollment Period runs for eight months after your employment or health insurance ends, whichever comes first.

If your employer has fewer than 20 employees, the rules may be different. Contact your HR department for more details.
