What kind of work does a Social Worker do?

As a social worker you will help many different kinds of people: the elderly, the poor, those with emotional or family problems, people with disabilities, people dependent on drugs or alcohol, people in the criminal justice system, and more. Your main duties will be to define issues, collect and assess data, develop treatment plans, and monitor outcomes. You’ll also address personal and group struggles, provide counseling services, and identify the treatments and programs that can help people improve their lives.

I’d like to start working soon. How long does school take?

Most professional social work jobs require a Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) as well as passing the Clinical Level Association of Social Work Board exam. You can anticipate two- to-four years of education for a master’s program after completing a four-year bachelor’s degree to enter the field. The good news is there are online social work programs available.

My budget is limited. How much does it cost?

Depending on what program you need, the cost can vary. For a bachelor’s program, the average cost for tuition in 2022 for an in-state student is $9,377 per year, not including expenses and supplies says Educationdata.org. The average cost of a master’s degree in social work is around $66,340. Choosing an accredited program might give you the opportunity to apply for financial aid to help pay for your education.

It’s been a while since I’ve been in school. How hard are the classes?

Your primary coursework will focus on social welfare, human behavior, diverse populations, community structure, social welfare programs, ethics, and substance abuse and addiction. As you move into your area of specialty in a master’s program, coursework will include research methods, leadership, and social work-focused subjects such as social work practice with individuals and families, social work practice with organizations, and social work theory.

How much money can I make as a Social Worker?

The national median annual salary for social workers rests at $58,380, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics 2023 data. That said, location, workplace, and experience may play key factors in your salary, as does education. As an example, social workers who worked in healthcare agencies earned more, with a median annual wage of $62,940. The BLS reports that the highest 10% of the field made over $94,910 annually.
