Germany's homeless problem compares with that in the US, with Federal Working Group Bag-W estimating it at 600,000 of which 50,000 live on the streets. In Germany authorites are expected to give emergency shelters to people on the streets. The Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and Building put out a 31 point Action Plan as a first step. Previous efforts have failed. The Action Plan includes getting financial assistance to state governments to build social housing -18.15 billion euros were allocated for 2022-2027 to build affordable social housing. Yet in the first year 2022 only 22,545 units were built short of the 100,000 goal per year. The $3 billion proposed by president Biden is the first time in history that money is being allocated to tackle elder homelessness. This WSJ report shows how older boomers holding onto larger homes for retirement and aging in these homes is worsening the supply of housing. Including for younger boomers who are in their 50's and who because housing is less affordable or because of a life event or healthcare costs are facing a high rate of homelessness. WSJ's report says $3 billion is unlikely to get thorough this Republican Congress but it is not enough to tackle the problem -because people should not be destitute in this way such as these younger boomers in America as an advanced developed Nation.

It is a dismal situation when 4 out of 5 persons in France do not know what work the European parliament does and what bills it has passed in recent years. Even though the $700 billion aid package for pandemic support was done in the EU parliament and the Green energy deal was also done there in Strasbourg, France most Europeans cannot name this or are unaware of it. About 46% or half of French think that European parliament elections on June 6-9 are for the European Commission. Boeing's gumdrop shaped ship that will take Sunita Williams 58 years and Barry Wilmore 61 years  to the International Space Station in May 2024. It launched at 10.34 am on Monday May 6, and will reach the Space Station in 1 day and return a week later to earth. Both Williams and Wilmore have made 2 trips on NASA space shuttle and on Russia's Soyuz vehicles to the International Space Station.

Daniel Barenboim on Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. It was performed 200 years ago. The Ode to Joy section of the Ninth is the anthem of the European Union. Originally Beethoven wanted to dedicate it to the ideals of the French Revolution. Beethoven struggled with hearing loss after 1812. Many of his works were written during the period in Bonn around 1780-1792 in Bonn near Cologne where he was born, followed by his period in Vienna composing works for the Viennese court. He was a contemporary duringthe Napoleonic period of Mozart, Haydn, and the writer Goethe who was from Frankfurt. Because of struggles with his hearing loss Beethoven's symphonies record both the highs and the lows, the triumphs and the periods of loss, the nature of the human condition in a period of great social and economic awakening in Europe that led to the Industrial Revolution and modern Europe.

Of the $12 billion in planned improvements for NY subway infrastructure this year only $2.9 billion will be spent in 2024. Congestion pricing is expected to generate $15 billion which is allocated to fund NY subway infrastructure. Lawsuits from the Governor of New Jersey and others now affect how much money goes into the subway improvements. This is not for a modernization of the NY Subway which would cost much more. It shows how year after year essential infrastructure is being starved of funding even as money gets allocated to non essential investments by capital markets in the US, and waste is rampant in capital market investments.
