Changes to the Form 5500 process impact how retirement plan size is calculated. Beginning on the first day of the 2023 plan year, a plan with fewer than 100 participants with account balances would be considered a “small” plan for Form 5500 purposes and be exempt from the audit requirement. But that doesn't mean a plan with 100 participants or more is automatically subject to annual audits.
