About the Garmin inReach® Messenger
No cell service? No problem
No cell service? No problem
If you roam far away from cell towers, you know how hard it can be to keep in touch with the outside world. Garmin's inReach Messenger offers a lightweight and compact way to keep friends and family in the loop, with global two-way texting, location sharing, and SOS capabilities. Messenger operates as a fully functional, standalone device with a built-in display, but it really shines when you pair it with Garmin's Messenger smartphone app.
Keep in touch
The Messenger app automatically chooses from Wi-Fi, cellular, or the Iridium® satellite service (subscription required) to ensure that your messages get through. You can sync our smartphone contacts list with the app for easy access to friends and family. The app supports group text chats so you can keep everyone up to date on your adventure, even those without an inReach device. And you can also enable location tracking and updates so they can follow your progress in real time.
In the event of an emergency...
Despite the best planning, sometimes things go wrong. inReach Messenger sports a dedicated SOS button so you can quickly summon help if an emergency happens. Garmin's International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC) is staffed 24/7 and will notify search and rescue organizations, keep you updated on the status of rescue efforts, and notify your designated emergency contacts.
Built for the backcountry
This tough, impact-resistant device weighs only 4 ounces and fits in the palm of your hand. With an iPX7 water rating, it will shrug off showers, downpours, or accidental dunkings.
With a default battery life of up to 28 days, you won't have to worry about recharging Messenger during any but the longest expeditions. And its "Safety Charging" feature will even power up your smartphone in the event it runs out of battery.
inReach Messenger is a perfect complement to your other Garmin devices, including navigators, smartwatches, and more. Once the devices are paired, you can share locations, send and receive messages, and send an SOS from your paired Garmin device.

I haven't had it out on the trail yet so I can't give it 5 stars, but it was very easy to set up and the app seems pretty decent. It was easy to set up my plan right from the app.
