What Is Extension Form Form 4868?

Citizens and residents of the USA are obliged to report their individual income with the IRS every year by the middle of April.

However, when it’s time to prepare a return, it sometimes happens that you’re not ready with all required calculations. For such cases, there’s a possibility to get more time for sending a tax return. All you have to do is to file an application - Form 4868 (the Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File an Individual Tax Return).

There are two official reasons for such a request. First, you either served in a military location or in a hazardous area. Second, you lived in another country. But there is another way to extend the time for reporting your taxes.

Evaluate your income tax and pay the whole amount or only some part of it with an indication, that this sum is for a prolongation. Note, that you have to submit a Schedule C, attaching it to your personal return if you are a sole proprietor or a single member of a limited liability company.

In case you are incorporated, it’s advised to consult with your accountant because there is a chance you may need other documentation.

The Extension Form provides an applicant a six-month prolongation, which subsequently lasts till the mid of October.

What Information do I Include in the Extension Form?

It doesn’t take much time to prepare this document. Insert the following information into the fillable fields:

• Your personal data (add the name of your spouse if you fill out a joint return);
• Your total tax liability for the year;
• The amount you have already paid;
• The sum you have to pay;
• The payment you want to make with your request.
