It takes its name from the nearby New York State Executive Mansion, which overlooks it. [3] It is a 45-acre (18 ha), 16- block area with almost 500 buildings.

Albany Rural Cemetery was incorporated in 1841, and is one of the oldest examples of the rural cemetery movement in America. The cemetery was consecrated on October 7, 1844.
