Loch Ewe (Scottish Gaelic: Loch Iùbh) is a sea loch in the region of Wester Ross in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland. The shores are inhabited by a traditionally Gàidhlig-speaking people [1] living in or sustained by crofting villages, [2] the most notable of which, situated on the north-eastern shore, is the Aultbea settlement.
Facilities in the village are limited. The Ledgowan Lodge Hotel is a mile west of the village, but the Achnasheen Hotel (by the railway station) burnt down in the early 1990s and has never been rebuilt. John Roy Mackenzie, 4th of Gairloch was born in 1548. [4] He received his estate from Mary, Queen of Scots in 1567. In 1606, he received a charter that made Gairloch a free barony and in 1619 he received another charter that added Kinkell to his estate.
The reservoir basin was drained in 1980 and is now grown over with plants. The garden was founded in 1983 by George Longenecker, a professor at West Virginia University, and a group of volunteers. The city leased the site for the garden in 1999, and the garden has since been maintained by volunteer work. [3]
