The Moraine View State Recreation Area is a state park operated by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) of the U.S. state of Illinois. The 1,687 acre (6.7 km 2) recreation area is located near Le Roy, Illinois. The predecessor of Moraine View, the McLean County Conservation Area, traces its history to 1959.
The McHenry dam was constructed in 1907 on the Fox River near McHenry, Illinois.The dam was donated to the state in 1924 and a new dam was built in 1934. McHenry Dam State Park was founded in 1939 with the purchase of 15 acres (6.1 ha) of land on the east bank of the river.
Part of the moraine is publicly owned as the Moraine View State Recreation Area. The river's course forms a large arc through central Illinois, first flowing east into Champaign County, Illinois, south through Mahomet, then west through Monticello and Decatur, then turning northwest to flow along the north side of Springfield.
