The Mental Health Parity Act (MHPA) is legislation signed into United States law on September 26, 1996 that requires annual or lifetime dollar limits on mental health benefits to be no lower than any such dollar limits for medical and surgical benefits offered by a group health plan or health insurance issuer offering coverage in connection with a group health plan.

Coverage limits: Some health insurance policies only pay for health care up to a certain dollar amount. In addition, some insurance company schemes have annual or lifetime coverage maxima.
The law requires insurance plans that cover mental health and substance use disorder care to offer the same level of coverage for these services as they do for medical and surgical issues.
