The school serves grades 10–12, with a secondary campus for 9th grade. The secondary campus was incorporated as one school two campuses 2020-2021 school year. Its mascot is the Bobcat.
As this program succeeded and spread throughout the United States, the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) began providing similar opportunities for girls of high school age. Thus Girls State was founded. The first Girls State was conducted in 1937 and since 1948 has been a regular part of the ALA's better citizenship programs. [11]

In 2021, the Varsity Girls Basketball team won the Texas 6A State Championship over an undefeated Cypress Creek High School (Texas). This was the first Girls State Basketball Championship in school history. In 2022, the Girls Basketball team would win a repeat championship title bringing their total to two state titles. [12]

Central High School was a senior high school for African-American students in Galveston, Texas. It was a part of the Galveston Independent School District (GISD). Lorraine Smith Tigner, quoted in the Galveston County Daily News, stated that Central, established as the Central School in 1885, was the first Texas school for black people.
