Johnson attended Blinn College in Brenham, Texas and transferred to the University of Louisville, where he was a letterman for two years and majored in administration of justice. At Louisville, Johnson had 44 total tackles (32 solo), one tackle for a loss, and seven defended passes.
Blinn's original script, titled Dreams, was much darker. Reckless director James Foley was offered to direct the film, but was not interested and instead passed it on to his editor Albert Magnoli, who disliked Blinn's script for lacking "truth", and was then hired to direct and edit after delivering a pitch on the spot to Cavallo.
