Opened in September 1990, its buildings take up around 1 million square feet (93,000 m 2). Its physical main building, parking lots, and ring road businesses encompass an area a bit less than 0.5 by 0.5 miles (800 by 800 m).
Vestiges of the mall's past—the scar of a former Thom McAn shop. Numerous redevelopment plans for the abandoned mall have been proposed, plans to redevelop the mall started since 1998, however, none of the proposals have come to fruition. On November 21, 2014, ABC News announced that Hawthorne Plaza would be revitalized as an outlet mall. [6]
It is one of the area’s largest and most successful enclosed super regional shopping centers. The mall is the centerpiece of the Sunrise MarketPlace shopping district in Citrus Heights. Sunrise Mall is accessible from I-80 or Highway 50 from most locations in the greater Sacramento area. The anchor stores are 2 Macy's stores and JCPenney.
