The five-story commemorative monument and an adjoining one-story building with the chapel was designed by local architect, Charles E. Thomas, who was hired by Julie and Spencer Penrose, the philanthropist and developer [5] [3]: 7:1 who built The Broadmoor resort [6] and Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. [7]
Broadmoor was one of five Colorado Springs suburbs annexed into Colorado Springs in 1980. The others were Ivywild, Skyway, Cheyenne Canon, and Stratton Meadows. The annexation added 6.5 square miles (17 km 2) and 20,000 people to the city's total area and population. The Colorado Supreme Court upheld the annexation in 1982.
Penrose. Spencer Penrose (November 2, 1865 – December 7, 1939) was an American entrepreneur and philanthropist. He made his fortune from mining, ore processing, and real estate speculation in Colorado and other parts of the West. He founded the Utah Copper Company in 1903, and also established mining operations in Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada.
Pauline Chapel (Colorado Springs, Colorado) The Pauline Chapel is a chapel on the National Register of Historic Places owned by The Broadmoor resort. It was built in 1919. The Chapel was not dedicated as a Catholic church until 1925. In 1918, Spencer Penrose submitted two designs for the chapel. The second was chosen. [1]
The Antlers in 2016. The Antlers is a Wyndham Hotel located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It opened in 1967 and is the third hotel of that name on the same site. The first Antlers Hotel was built in 1883 and burned down in 1898. The second Antlers Hotel, completed in 1901, was torn down in 1964 to make way for the current Antlers.
