Tyrus Wong (October 25, 1910 – December 30, 2016) was a Chinese-born American artist. He was a painter , animator , calligrapher , muralist , ceramicist , lithographer and kite maker , as well as a set designer and storyboard artist .
Synopsis. Tyrus Wong immigrates to the U.S. from Guangzhou as a boy. Though living in poverty, his father, encourages Wong's unique talent for drawing. Inspired by the art of the Song Dynasty and abstract Western painters like Picasso and Whistler, Wong employed simple brushstrokes, using watercolors and pastels, to create lush forests and green meadows.
Asian American art can mostly be traced back to the West Coast with artists also popping up in New York. Tyrus Wong (1910-2016), who emigrated to the US from China, is considered to be one of the influential artists of the 20th century. He was a muralist for the Works Progress Administration.
