The African Masters Athletics (AFMA) is a regional body of World Masters Athletics, [1] responsible for organizing masters athletics championship competitions for athletes from the continent of Africa. It was founded on 12 May, 1994 as African Veterans Athletic Association (AVAA). [2] All athletes 35 years of age or older are eligible to compete.
At the bottom of the emblem is a pictogram of a handshake. Below this is written in Kiswahili is "Jumuiya ya Afrika Mashariki" which translates as 'East African Community'. The colours used on the emblem are the same as those used on the flag of the East African Community which also features the emblem in its centre.
