Karate ( Shotokan, Shitō-ryū and Motobu-ryū ), Jujutsu ( Shindō Yōshin-ryū, other) Wadō-ryū (和道流) is one of the four major karate styles and was founded by Hironori Ōtsuka (1892–1982). Karate (空手) ( / kəˈrɑːti /; Japanese pronunciation: [kaɾate] ⓘ; Okinawan pronunciation: [kaɽati] ), also karate-do (空手道, Karate-dō), is a martial art developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom. It developed from the indigenous Ryukyuan martial arts (called te (手), "hand"; tī in Okinawan) under the influence of Chinese martial arts.
Some later styles of karate have been derived from blending techniques from the four main branches, while others have added techniques from other martial arts. For example Kyokushin, which is an extremely hard style derived from Shotokan and Gōjū-ryū, involves much more breaking and full contact, knockdown sparring as a main part of training.
