Putnam was selected by the Texas Rangers in the first round of the 1975 Major League Baseball draft. He had been drafted a year earlier by the New York Mets, but did not sign. Putnam batted only .242 his first professional season in the Rangers' farm system; however, his batting average jumped to .361 with 24 home runs in 1976.
Putnam was born in 1718 in Salem Village (now Danvers), Massachusetts to Joseph and Elizabeth (Porter) Putnam, a prosperous farming Puritan family. His parents had opposed the Salem witch trials in the 1690s. [2] Putnam moved west in 1740 at age 22 to Mortlake, Connecticut [3] (today Brooklyn) where land was cheaper. [4]
