Stevenson University was founded in Maryland as Villa Julie College in 1947 by the Roman Catholic women's religious order Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur as a one-year school training women to become medical secretaries. The college was named for Saint Julie Billiart, foundress of the Sisters of Notre Dame.
She enrolled in the newly opened school run by the Belgian order of nuns, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, at age 13 and became an accomplished student. On 1 January 1846, she entered the convent as the first American postulant. She was professed on 25 April 1846, taking the name Julia in honour of Julie Billiart, the order's founder.
The society was founded in 1804 by St. Julie Billiart (1751–1816) as Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in France. From there the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame was formed in Coesfeld, Germany, in 1850, from where the mission spread, offering educational, social and medical services.
