The city of Grand Rapids was incorporated April 2, 1850. [9] It was officially established on May 2, 1850, when the village of Grand Rapids voted to accept the proposed city charter. The population at the time was 2,686. By 1857, the city of Grand Rapids' area totaled 10.5 square miles (27 km 2 ).
The Valley Press was founded by A.J. Hicks on Saturday, April 3, 1915, as the Palmdale Post. At the time, the Valley was home to about 3,500 people. Over the decades of the 20th century, the newspaper changed hands, and there were a few name changes as well. On May 4, 1950, the paper became known as the South Antelope Valley Press .
On August 24, 1962, Palmdale became the first city in Antelope Valley. Forty-seven years later, in November 2009, voters approved making it a charter city. Palmdale's population was 169,450 at the 2020 census, up from 152,750 at the 2010 census. Palmdale is the 32nd most populous city in California.

Andrew Carnegie pledged $150,000 to support the new building, but the building was named for its other donor, Martin A. Ryerson, who was a Grand Rapids native. The building opened around 1904, after about two years of construction. In 1967, the library more than doubled in size with the addition of the Keeler wing. [citation needed]
In 1892, the library moved to four rooms in the newly constructed City Hall. When Grand Rapids and neighboring Centralia merged in 1900 and established a new city hall across the river, the library gradually expanded into the former city offices. In 1920, the city was renamed Wisconsin Rapids.
