Historic site. Green Lawn Cemetery is an active historic private rural cemetery located in Columbus, Ohio, in the United States. Organized in 1848 and opened in 1849, the cemetery was the city's premier burying ground in the 1800s and beyond. An American Civil War memorial was erected there in 1891, and chapel constructed in 1902.
The Sullivants first occupied the home in 1801, including Lucas, his wife Sarah Starling, and their three sons (born in 1803, 1807, and 1809). The family hosted numerous large events there, and its extensive backyard was the location for an 1813 conference between William Henry Harrison and indigenous leaders during the War of 1812 .
The cemetery was established in part to replace the old St. Patrick's Cemetery, which was located in downtown Columbus and had become encircled by the city's growth. [4] A plot of just over 25 acres (10 ha) of land, outside the city's original limits, was purchased in 1865 by John F. Zimmer in trust for the Diocese of Columbus, and burials on the site also began that year. [1]
The former Franklin County Veterans Memorial in 2005. The current museum occupies the same location. The site along the west side of the Scioto River near the Discovery Bridge on Broad Street was originally home to the Franklin County Veterans Memorial, [3] which originally opened in 1955 [4] and was demolished to make way for the museum in early 2015, [5] by S.G. Loewendick & Sons. [6]
Today the district is still home to Franklin University and the Market-Mohawk apartment building, the Ohio Democratic Party Building, the Ohio Republican Party Building, and Columbus Downtown High School. There is an intact block of buildings built in the 1960s, though other buildings built nearby at that time have since been replaced.
Saint Patrick Church is a historic building and the second-oldest Catholic church building in Columbus, Ohio. [7] Located in the Discovery District neighborhood, the structure served as the pro-cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Columbus until the consecration of Saint Joseph Cathedral.
