Port Richey was incorporated as a municipality in 1925, in response to the incorporation of New Port Richey the previous year. The name Port Richey is older than the name New Port Richey, as the post offices were established in 1884 and 1915, respectively. Singer Johnny Cash owned a home along the Pithlachascotee River from 1979 until 2002. [6]
From June 23 to 26, 2012, Tropical Storm Debby produced a significant tornado outbreak across the Florida Peninsula.Throughout the entire event, 25 tornadoes touched down across the state, making the outbreak the second largest on record in Florida, behind only that spawned by Hurricane Agnes, which produced 28 tornadoes from June 18 to 19, 1972. The park was scheduled to reopen for the weekend on August 27 or August 28. However, once Katrina was forecast late on Friday, August 26, to hit New Orleans directly, the weekend reopening was canceled to prepare for the storm and begin evacuations.
