William Tappan Thompson. William Tappan Thompson (August 31, 1812 – March 24, 1882). He co-founded the Savannah Morning News in the 1850s, known then as the Daily Morning News. One of his most notable works was Major Jones's Courtship, an epistolary novel. Thompson's best-known fictional character was Major Joseph Jones.
On April 23, 1863, the Savannah Morning News editor William Tappan Thompson, with assistance from William Ross Postell, a Confederate blockade runner, published an editorial championing a design featuring the battle flag on a white background he referred to later as "The White Man's Flag", a name which never caught on.

William Tappan Thompson, author of the Major Jones series of humorous stories, along with John McKinney Cooper as publisher and owner, founded the paper on January 15, 1850 as the Daily Morning News. At the end of the Civil War in 1865, John Cooper was pardoned by President Andrew Johnson allowing him to retain ownership of the paper.
