Palm Beach International Airport began operations in 1936 as Morrison Field. It was named in honor of Grace Morrison, a key participant in the planning and organization of the airfield. The first flight departing the field was a New York bound DC-2 operated by Eastern Air Lines in 1936. The airport was dedicated on December 19, 1936.

To enhance itself as the lone airport for a metro area of over 1.6 million people, a new terminal was built on Post Road in 1964, replacing the old 1933 terminal along Airport Road. In 1996 this terminal was replaced, expanding to 18 gates, and adding a lower arrival level and an upper departure level. In 1997 four gates were added.
The work was carried out in three stages. The first stage included the design and construction of a new 247,000 sq ft (22,900 m 2) U.S. Departures Terminal, at a cost of $198.1 million. Stage 2 consisted of the complete renovation of the current U.S. terminal, to serve as the new U.S/International Arrivals Terminal, with a budget of $127.9 million.
