Security Assertion Markup Language. Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML, pronounced SAM-el, / ˈsæməl /) [1] is an open standard for exchanging authentication and authorization data between parties, in particular, between an identity provider and a service provider.
The service provider, wishing to know the identity of the user, issues an authentication request to a SAML identity provider through the user agent. The identity provider is the one that provides the user credentials. The service provider trusts the user information from the identity provider to provide access to its services or resources.
Two important user interfaces at the identity provider are the login page and the user consent interface. The <idpdisc:DiscoveryResponse> extension element [CS 4] defines an endpoint used in conjunction with identity provider discovery. The service provider software is presumably configured with a private SAML decryption key.
