Istrouma High School is an accredited public school located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States. It was founded in 1917, and is located in East Baton Rouge Parish. Its name is a local Indian word meaning "red stick." Red stick is also the English language translation of the French words baton rouge.
Catholic High School was founded in 1894 as St. Vincent's Academy. The school was so named in recognition of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, who helped organize and establish the school. St. Joseph's Academy (SJA) is the oldest high school in Baton Rouge. It is the sister school of the all-boys Catholic High School, only three-tenths of a mile to the north. The Baton Rouge Colored High School was located at the corner of Perkins Road and Bynum Street in 1913. This facility was later struck by lightning and destroyed. McKinley was the first high school established for African Americans in East Baton Rouge Parish. McKinley's first graduating class was in 1916.
