Subsampling is an alternative method for approximating the sampling distribution of an estimator. The two key differences to the bootstrap are: the resample size is smaller than the sample size and; resampling is done without replacement. The advantage of subsampling is that it is valid under much weaker conditions compared to the bootstrap.
Bootstrapping is any test or metric that uses random sampling with replacement (e.g. mimicking the sampling process), and falls under the broader class of resampling methods. Bootstrapping assigns measures of accuracy ( bias, variance, confidence intervals, prediction error, etc.) to sample estimates.
v. t. e. Bootstrap aggregating, also called bagging (from b ootstrap agg regat ing ), is a machine learning ensemble meta-algorithm designed to improve the stability and accuracy of machine learning algorithms used in statistical classification and regression. It also reduces variance and helps to avoid overfitting.
Random forests or random decision forests is an ensemble learning method for classification, regression and other tasks that operates by constructing a multitude of decision trees at training time. For classification tasks, the output of the random forest is the class selected by most trees. For regression tasks, the mean or average prediction ...
In statistics, the jackknife (jackknife cross-validation) is a cross-validation technique and, therefore, a form of resampling . It is especially useful for bias and variance estimation. The jackknife pre-dates other common resampling methods such as the bootstrap. Given a sample of size , a jackknife estimator can be built by aggregating the ...
Maximum parsimony (phylogenetics) In phylogenetics and computational phylogenetics, maximum parsimony is an optimality criterion under which the phylogenetic tree that minimizes the total number of character-state changes (or minimizes the cost of differentially weighted character-state changes). Under the maximum-parsimony criterion, the ...
Soon after the introduction of gradient boosting, Friedman proposed a minor modification to the algorithm, motivated by Breiman's bootstrap aggregation ("bagging") method. Specifically, he proposed that at each iteration of the algorithm, a base learner should be fit on a subsample of the training set drawn at random without replacement.
Artificial intelligence and machine learning. Bootstrapping is a technique used to iteratively improve a classifier 's performance. Typically, multiple classifiers will be trained on different sets of the input data, and on prediction tasks the output of the different classifiers will be combined.
