The church was founded in 1948 as a house Bible study group called the Bethany Baptist Mission, then First Baptist Church, led by Sam and Ethel Hane in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. In 1991, Bob Merritt became the senior pastor of the 300-member church. In 1995, the church was renamed Eagle Brook Church.

The church then relocated to 19 Holland Road, Blackburn South (now the site of New Life Evangelical Church), and later moved in September 1995 to the current location, 2 Vision Drive, Burwood East, after which it changed its name to Crossway Baptist Church the following year.
