Kilimanjaro is the fourth most topographically prominent peak on Earth. It is part of Kilimanjaro National Park and is a major hiking and climbing destination. Because of its shrinking glaciers and ice fields, which are projected to disappear between 2025 and 2035, it has been the subject of many scientific studies.
Kilimanjaro National Park is a Tanzanian national park located 300 kilometres (190 mi) south of the equator [1] in the Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania. The park is located near the region of Moshi. [3] The park includes the whole of Mount Kilimanjaro above the tree line and the surrounding montane forest belt above 1,820 metres (5,970 ft).
The glacier is named after Walter Furtwängler [ de] who, with Siegfried König, formed the fourth party to ascend to the summit of Kilimanjaro in 1912. [1] The glacier is a small remnant of an ice cap that once crowned the summit of Kilimanjaro. Almost 85 percent of the ice cover disappeared from October 1912 to June 2011. [2]
