Varanasi ( Vārāṇasī, Hindi: [ʋaːˈraːɳəsi] ⓘ; [a] also Benares, Banaras ( Banāras [bəˈnaːrəs] ⓘ) [13] [14] [15] or Kashi ( Kāshi [ˈka:ʃi] ⓘ) [16]) is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
