San Diego County ( / ˌsæn diˈeɪɡoʊ / ⓘ ), officially the County of San Diego ( Spanish: Condado de San Diego ), is a county in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of California. As of the 2020 census, the population was 3,298,634, [7] making it California's second-most populous county and the fifth-most populous in the United States.
The County government provides countywide services such as elections and voter registration, law enforcement, jails, vital records, property records, tax collection, public health, and social services. In addition the County serves as the local government for all unincorporated areas.
Of the 58 counties in California, 14 are governed under a charter. They are Alameda, Butte, El Dorado, Fresno, Los Angeles, Orange, Placer, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Tehama. [6] Nine counties in California are named for saints, tied with Louisiana for the largest number.
