The Standard was created by William R. Givens in 1907, when he acquired the News and Times, which had been an amalgamation of the Kingston News and Evening Times in 1903. The two men amalgamated the papers on 1 December 1926, creating the Whig-Standard. The word "Kingston" was dropped from the name in 1973, but was reinstated in the early 1990s.
The News is believed to have started in 1839, and is listed as having united with the Kingston Chronicle & Gazette to become the Chronicle and News in 1847. Sometime in 1847, the paper merged with the Kingston News to form the Chronicle and News under Samuel Rowland, which would eventually be merged with the Kingston Times to form the News and Times, which would later be rebranded the Standard and merged with the British Whig.
