John Keells Hotels closed the Bentota Beach Hotel for renovations in July 2017. At the time, the hotel was a four-star 133-key property. [ 14 ] The 2019 Sri Lanka Easter bombings and closed hotels for renovations affected the company's performance for two quarters back to back. [ 15 ]
History. The hotel was commissioned by Herbert Cooray in 1995 for his travel company Jetwings and designed by Geoffrey Bawa. [1] The Lighthouse Hotel, as it was originally known, opened on 7 June 1997. [2] The hotel initially had 60 rooms and three suites, two restaurants, a swimming pool and recreational facilities.
The hotel became the first five-star beach resort in the country. [7] In 2012, Heritance Ahungalla offered "Pirates Fantasy", what the hotel called the 'most expensive cake in the world' priced at US$35 million. The cake had several layers with different ingredients, including cinnamon, zucchini and purple yam.
