He was the 60th Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army (CoS) and former Deputy Chief of Staff of Sri Lanka Army. [1] He also served as the Colonel of the Regiment of Sri Lanka Light Infantry.

The first battalion primarily consisted of 60 officers and other ranks from the Ceylon Light Infantry with Lt Col R. D. Jayathilaka MBE as the first commanding officer.
