It was the first crematorium established in the state of Iowa and one of the oldest in the United States. The facility was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
In November 1865, the Iowa Soldiers' Orphans' Home was opened in Davenport to take in children left orphaned by the Civil War. In 1895, the city hall was built, and in 1897, the first chiropractic school in the world, Palmer Chiropractic College was opened. Davenport experienced an economic and building boom in the 1920s and early 1930s.
In time lumber baron John L. Davies built his home on the property before the Diocese of Iowa bought the property for St. Katharine's. A fire erupted at several lumber mills on July 24, 1901, in the Village of East Davenport. It destroyed 20 acres (8.1 ha) of land, 250 people were left homeless, and businesses suffered $1.25 million in losses.
