Utica is served by the Hinds County School District, and is zoned to Utica Elementary-Middle School and Raymond High School in Raymond. It is also the home of the Utica campus of Hinds Community College. Formerly Utica Junior College, the school was founded in 1903 as Utica Normal and Industrial Institute.
In 1942 the New York Legislature elevated it from a normal school to a degree-granting teachers' college, Oswego State Teachers College, which was a founding and charter member of the State University of New York system in 1948. In 1962 the college broadened its scope to become a liberal arts college. Campus Sheldon Hall was constructed in 1913.
Hamilton College is a private liberal arts college in Clinton, New York. It was originally established as the Hamilton-Oneida Academy in 1793 and later received its charter as Hamilton College in 1812, in honor of Alexander Hamilton, one of its inaugural trustees, following a proposal made after his death in 1804.
