Carrillo is a former member of the Palmdale City Council. In June 2022, Carrillo easily defeated former state Assemblyman Steve Fox and Andrew Rosenthal in the non-partisan primary election for the 39th district of the California State Assembly. In November 2022, he defeated Paul Marsh in the general election, winning 56% of the votes.

On August 24, 1962, Palmdale became the first city in Antelope Valley. Forty-seven years later, in November 2009, voters approved making it a charter city. Palmdale's population was 169,450 at the 2020 census, up from 152,750 at the 2010 census. Palmdale is the 32nd most populous city in California.
The Valley Press was founded by A.J. Hicks on Saturday, April 3, 1915, as the Palmdale Post. At the time, the Valley was home to about 3,500 people.
